KYLE

I am nervous as hell. I am fidgeting at the table. My mom looks at me critically. “What has got you so jittery?”

“I am going to beg the woman I love to take me back tonight.” I state it plainly. I want everyone to know. I am done hiding it.

She smirks. “Oh, yeah, and who is that?”

“Danny Baker.”

Her smile falls. “Wait, I thought you were into Courtney. When did this happen?”

“I have loved Danny for a long time but I never manned up. I have taken time to get to know her more and I don’t want to be without her anymore.”

My mom nods. My dad smiles. “Well, then what are you waiting for, son. Go get her.”

I leap up from the table. I don’t want to wait any longer, with a go ahead, I am gone.

They don’t live that far from me, but it seems to take forever to get there. Like she is too far away. I had bought flowers for her before dinner. Now they sit in my passenger seat waiting for her.

I pull up in front of her house and am surprised to not see her or Courtney’s cars. Usually they would be both here, it’s strange to not see either. I grab the flowers and head to the door. I am barely on the bottom step when Mr. Baker comes out. “Was it you?”

“Did you get my daughter pregnant?”

I keep my face as completely straight as possible here. I do not want him to doubt this statement. “I did not get Courtney pregnant.”

“Did you get Danielle pregnant?” His anger is still there. But I feel like he just shoved an iron rod in my heart.

“Danny is pregnant?” I can’t move. I can hardly breathe. I haven’t talked to her in over six weeks. She thinks I hate her guts.

He must have seen my face, because he is seething. He punches me square in the jaw. “You son of a bitch. How dare you do that to my daughter?” I am seeing stars. The old man can hit. I stagger a little. Fuck, this is not good. He looks like he will hit me again.

I put my hands up in surrender. “I didn’t know. I swear to you I will make this right. Danny will not be alone. I will do right by her.”

He grabs the scruff of my shirt and gets right in my face. “You fucking better.”

He pushes me back and all that is ringing in my head is that she is pregnant with my kid. There is no doubt in my mind about that. I didn’t use protection. I didn’t care at the time. She was all that I wanted. I panicked and left. I have to fix this.

Mrs. Baker comes out to hold her husband back. I backed down the driveway. “I will marry her. I am not leaving her.”

Mrs. Baker cocks her head at me. “I thought you liked Courtney?”

“I am in love with Danny, Mrs. Baker. I came here tonight to beg her to take me back. I did something stupid and she didn’t tell me about the baby. But I swear to you that before the end of the night I will propose.” I don’t hesitate now. I turn to run to my truck. I have to get to Danny. She can’t be alone another minute.
