“Is there anyone here for the pregnant lady?” A nurse walked towards the reception to ask. Xander hurried forward to respond. “Yes, please. I am her friend. How is she doing?.” “I can’t tell you it would be best if her husband, boyfriend, or mother is here.” The nurse said. “She is an orphan and a divorcee. Where do you expect her to get all of those listed attributes?” He raised his voice at her. Carla rubbed at his back. “Calm down, Xander. The young lady is only doing her job.” “Then she should do it bloody right.” He growled. The older woman turned to the nurse, who looked pale. “I am sorry, my dear. Just as he said, she does not have a direct family. Xander here is the closest family she has. Let him see the doctor.” “Yes, ma’am.” The nurse replied meekly and urged Xander to come with her. “Hello, doctor,” Xander said in a calmer voice when he entered the office. “I am Xander Jackson, Nina Ruiz’s guardian.” He said. “Welcome, Mr. Jackson. I am Dr. Dave. Please sit.” The doctor introduced. Xander seemed to have run out of patience as he delved right into what brought him there. “Where is she? How is she doing?” “Calm down, Mr Jackson. She is stable now. From the tests carried out, we found out that she has preeclampsia.” “What the hell is that?” “There are many factors that result in it. But in Miss Ruiz’s case, it’s due to high blood pressure. She does have a history of it before falling pregnant. Also, she has been going through too much stress, which has lowered her sugar level. And from her records, she hasn’t been attending her doctor appointments. Do you know about that?” Xander shook his head in response, too shocked to say anything. “Will she be fine?” “Yes, but that would imply enough bed rest and close care. Nina can’t be left alone in this period since she is in her last trimester. It’s good they moved her early; it could have been worse. Everything would be fine if she takes her prescriptions and rests well.” “Thank you, doctor. I will make sure to pay close attention to that. Can I see her now?” “Sure.” He said. Xander followed the doctor to the ward Nina was in. She looked pale and tired, and his heart clenched. Carla was already seated next to her. The minute Nina sighted him, she hissed in irritation. “Don’t you dare take a step closer?” She said weakly but firmly. “But, Nina-” “Get out!” She yelled, giving him no time to say anything. The doctor held him by the arm. “You are stressing her out. Please leave.” Xander couldn’t believe his ears. But one look at Nina, he can tell she doesn’t want him there. He swallowed hard and stepped out but only to fall into the hands of a stern-looking Tania. “And what do you think you are doing here?” She queried. Xander had his mouth agape at Tania’s unfriendly glare. “Tania, what’s wrong? What did I do?” He asked, genuinely confused. Carla came out when Tania was about to give him a piece of her mind. “Why don’t you go in, dear? Nina is waiting for you.” She said. “Thanks, Carla,” Tania mumbled while giving Xander a cold stare. “What is going on? Why am I being seen as the villain? Did I do something wrong?” He questioned all at once. She exhaled slowly and explained everything she knew was happening at the company. Xander looked livid. He didn’t like that she told Jace not to say to him. Telling her he would be back, he stormed out of the hospital and instructed his driver to take him to the company. Xander dialed Jace on his way and asked that he be in the office before he arrived. “Hey, see who missed me.” Jace joked when his brother walked in. His smile disappeared when he noticed Xander’s countenance. “What happened?” “Why don’t you tell me?” He retorted in an unpleasant tone. Jace chuckled awkwardly. “Xander-” “Don’t you dare?” He gritted, pointing a finger at him. “What is the essence of having you next to me as a brother, and you do not think you should look out for me? Didn’t you tell me everything was fine and Nina was good?” “Yes, I said so. But I thought it would be best to keep the things I had to say until you return. “You fool! Your silence has landed her in a hospital, and to think some staff made such remarks about her, and you didn’t have every one of them sacked?!”Xander was boiling in anger. He can’t seem to get a grip on himself. “How am I supposed to do that when half of the staff are involved? I am sorry about what happened to Nina. But it got to me late, and I tried to make my findings, and I did get something.” “You know what? I do not care about whatever you have done before! Take the phone to the technical team and have them fish out those who started all this nonsense, report them to HR, and I want them out of my company! I want all that done in thirty minutes and need the report on my table immediately. Do not make me wait!” He gritted. Jace nodded and scampered off. He had never seen his brother look so livid before. It almost amused him, but he was worried at the same time. Xander paced the room repeatedly, mumbling incoherent words under his breath. He can’t help but blame himself for everything that happened. Xander knew he should have been more vigilant. Knowing Nina is at a point where anything can trigger and destabilize her, he should have done better at protecting her. The door opened, and he thought it was Jace. It turned out to be Dawn, but he didn’t look pleased. “Dawn.” He drawled with less enthusiasm. Dawn smiled brightly at him, closing the space between them to hug him. “Hey, boo. I didn’t know you were back.” “So what are you doing here if you didn’t know I was back?” Xander sounded rude, but he wasn’t in the mood to be courteous. Taken aback by his coldness, she smiled weakly. “What’s wrong? Did someone offend you?” He was about to ask Dawn her job description for people to bully Nina, and she did nothing. However, Jace entry put a stop to it. “I have the report. Those people have received the letters.” Jace said. “What report?” Dawn asked. None of them answered as Xander skipped through the file. He picked up the phone from the table and dialed Lisa, sending a memo for a meeting at that minute. All heads of department and teams are in the meeting room now.” Dawn blinked in confusion, “Why are you holding a meeting?” She asked. “You will find out when you get there.” Xander retorted as he walked away without sparing her a glance. Jace looked victorious and didn’t hesitate to show it to her. Everyone had settled in the meeting room by the time Xander walked in. He shunned their greetings, and with his hands in his pockets and a cold look in his eyes, he stared right into the souls of each one of them. His voice started in a calm but dangerous tone. “I see that you all are beginning to take me for granted and not knowing your places. What do you think this place is? A walk in the park arena? Do I pay you to be idle and gossip around? Or does this place seem like the toxic environment you all are coming from? How did a company of almost a thousand workers turn to bully one person?!” His voice rose at a high tempo. Everyone glanced at each other, confused, except for Dawn and Jace. “Mrs Albert.” Xander rumbled the head of human resources name. The woman looked like she would pass out hearing him call her. But he didn’t look a bit bothered. “What exactly is your job description? How did you not know that the staff were spreading rumors about their fellow staff? Aren’t you supposed to protect the staff? Isn’t that your job to do?” He paused, heaving and glaring at her. The poor woman stared like a frightened little child. “Can you not answer!” Xander bellowed, his voice echoing through the entire walls. “Why the hell am I paying you?! You watch a staff get bullied and sit back and do nothing?!” Mrs Albert jolted and felt like she would collapse. The room fell extra silent, and a pin drop would have made a shattering noise. Xander cursed out. “I wish I could just toss you all into the streets to find a job since you feel too comfortable with this one. How can you not regulate anything without me being here? Why would you sit in the comfort of your offices and be unaware of the things happening amongst the staff? Do you think I pay you to be idle? Did you know people working under you speak ill of staff and even went as far as creating a group chat to gossip, and you did nothing? You better not be in that group, or I will have you fired! Jace, I need a report on that group. And don’t try to be shady with me. Print out a dismissal letter if anyone in this room is on that malicious group.” He sucked in a breath and rubbed at his forehead. “You know what? Enough with the talks. From now on, anyone who calls his fellow staff a foul name gets suspended. I don’t care who the hell it turns out to be; get those damned people out of my company. I will not let such madness in my company that I worked hard all these years to build. If you think I am bluffing, try me out!” He glowered, storming out of the room. Dawn ran after him. “Xander! Wait! Where are you going? What’s wrong with you?” Xander paused abruptly and turned a cold look towards her. “For your good, Dawn. Stay away from me.” He warned, continuing his walk.
