DAWN’S HOME, NEW YORK. Dawn gritted her teeth angrily as she stared at her laptop screen. She can’t seem to understand what is going on. Dawn would like to believe someone manipulated the charts. When the marketing department sent the report to her, she didn’t think about it until she called a board member to affirm it. X&J Foods has broken its record, making massive sales in less than forty-eight hours of product promotion. She shut her eyes tightly and screamed at the top of her voice. The more she tries to ruin Nina, the stronger she gets. Not even the scandal has deterred her. Standing up, Dawn paced the room back and forth, thinking about what to do. She snapped her finger at the thought that crossed her mind. She would need to put in more pressure. Also, the first plot is still very much intact. That alone should be enough to serve as a compensation. Minny pushed her room door to enter while carrying a bowl of popcorn. “Did you scream a minute ago?” Dawn eyeballed her. “Nice of you to come after a minute. What if I was harming myself?” She gave her a terse look. “I doubt you would ever do a thing like that. You love yourself too much.” She threw some popcorn into her mouth. “So, what is going on with you? I thought everything was falling into place?” “Fall into place, my foot. That bitch keeps getting stronger at every cut of her tail. I have never seen a person so determined. What the hell!” She ranted. “Can you just take a moment to breathe and calmly explain what happened?” Dawn picked up her laptop and showed it to Minny. “Am I supposed to understand the fusion of lines?” She shut her eyes tightly and gnashed her teeth. “This is exactly the reason why I am pissed at Mum for allowing you to delve into fashion. You know nothing. That chart shows that X&J Foods is making crazy sales.” “And this is all Nina’s doing?” “Of course it is!” “I thought you cut down her budget?” “Yes, I did. I was so hopeful thinking that Sly would cave in.” Minny smacked her lips and chewed further on her snack. “Well, I am sure she probably got help or used her money.” “Oh, please. That bitch lives in Xander’s house. I am sure she was homeless and only has a roof over her head because of him.” Dawn paused to think and blurted out a string of curses. “That stupid boyfriend of yours, Jace, must have helped her.” “Jace is not my boyfriend, if you must know. That idiot is making my life chaotic. Anyway, the rumors about her spreading bend her knees.” She scoffed. “I am telling you, that bitch is one hell of a determined one. She won’t budge. She still walks around with her head high. To think Jace confronted me on her behalf. He already suspects that I might have something to do with it.” Dawn can’t believe her attempt to burden Nina emotionally wouldn’t prompt her to resign. Many staff members have been victims of that and have left their jobs. She had paid two of the staff to spread gossip about Nina’s involvement with Xander and ensure it was the only thing everyone in the company talked about. However, they must ensure she has nothing to do with it. Her decision to eliminate her competition drives Dawn to do whatever it takes. With Xander’s absence, it just feels like perfect timing. Minny hummed loudly. “Do you know what I think?” “What?” “I think you should add more flame.” “How?” “Let them say she is also sneaking around with Jace and playing innocent. He sure deserves it for ignoring me.” Minny snorted. A devilish smile settled on Dawn’s face. “That doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all. That should work.” She said, reaching for her phone and typing quickly on it. “These men need to know that it’s either us or no one else.” Minny boasted, flipping her hair. “I didn’t realize you two have become the devil’s reincarnate.” A stern voice stated from the door. The two of them froze at the voice of their mother. Dawn kept her hands behind while Minny almost landed on her face in a bid to stand up without pouring out her popcorn. Their mother is the only person they can’t seem to look in the eye. “M-mum.” Dawn stuttered. “When did you arrive?” Imelda glared in distaste as she settled on the edge of the bed. “You would have known when I arrived if you weren’t so preoccupied with running after a man who doesn’t want you.” Minny chuckled awkwardly. “That isn’t the case, mum.” “Did I talk to you?” She queried. Minny shook her head in response. “I don’t remember calling your name, so I do not understand why you think it is okay to meddle. Now let me ask you, why are you gallivanting around with Jace when you have a fiance?” Minny looked towards Dawn for help, but she turned her face away instead. “We are just friends, mum.” “You liar. I heard you just now. And you….” Imelda sneered at Dawn. “Who are you trying to ruin this time just because of a man? It is the same reason your ex became aggressive with you. You think you are too good of a woman that no man should turn you down. You act like we are all in this world to worship you.” Dawn looked offended. “What are you saying, mum? Why would you mock me with my hurtful past?” “Which you brought upon yourself! I will not be the mother who pampers her children even when they are nuisances. I trained you better and gave you enough freedom to get your life together and carve a niche for yourself. Instead, you two turned yourself into whores, pushing for men who want nothing to do with you. Xander has never shown intimate affection towards you. Yet you let Venus, who is clueless about her life, fool you into believing that the young man might want you. I have never met anyone as dumb as you are.” She hissed. “I do not enjoy your insults, Mum. That is enough. I am old enough to do whatever I want with my life. Stop trying to impose your principles on my sister and me.” She refuted, and Minny nodded in agreement. Imelda cackled, “I have no idea why I am surprised at your attitude. You are your father’s daughter, after all. I shouldn’t expect you two to know better. You are just like him.” She stood up, dusting herself like sitting on a dusty surface. “I hope you two remember this: nothing you take forcefully will ever last. I will be at the hotel if you think it necessary to say hello.” She mused, walking out on them. The sisters exchanged a knowing glance and went mute as words would fail them. ******************* Carlos ran into the office almost out of breath. “What exactly is going on?” He questioned no one in particular. “I hope Nina isn’t nearby?” Matilda raised a brow. “Why are you asking?” “Check your messages.” He urged, pulling a chair to sit. They did as told and shared a shocked expression when they saw what he was talking about. Their gossip page had updated something new about Nina, saying she is two-timing the boss by sleeping with his brother, Jace. They didn’t stop at that and even said he might be embezzling the company funds for her use. “Now, I am mad.” Joshua gritted. “What is wrong with these people? How can they be so stupid?” Nina walked in just in time. They gave her a sympathetic look, and she didn’t bother to ask why. She was coming from the restroom and had heard them talking about the new gossip about her. Her heart was racing fast against her chest. Without a word, she moved to her table and searched her bag for her drugs. But nothing was in her bag, which was strange. She checked again, and nothing came forth. She must have forgotten it at home. “Are you alright, Nina?” Matilda asked. She nodded absentmindedly, still looking around. “Can you cover for me, please? I need to get something from home quickly.” “Sure, take your time,” Joshua replied. “You don’t look too good. Should I drive you instead?” Carlos offered. Nina waved a dismissive hand while holding back the wince stuck in her throat from the sharp pain that struck her under the belly. “No, don’t bother. I will be back soon.” A hit of distorted waves slammed against her as she stepped outside the company. It felt like she couldn’t make it back to her car. Her hands were shaky, and her body felt distorted. Making up her mind, she flagged down a taxi to take her home instead. They arrived quickly, and she managed to drag her legs inside. It felt like it was heavy, and her senses were getting dim. The heart raced at a further high speed as she searched around the house for her drugs. She panted when it dawned that she had taken the last dose yesterday morning. Her doctor had also called to ask when she would come by the hospital, and she had promised to visit later in the week. Nina felt her body jerk, and she almost hit the floor violently, if not because she held onto the kitchen island tightly. Still trying to recover, her body weakened all at once, with her hands becoming heavy to raise and taking a move to reach for her phone and dial 911. Nina felt the ground swirl underneath her, and everything went dark. Carla entered the house on a call, surprised that Nina was home early after she met the door open. “I think she is home.” She mumbled into the receiver. Xander cleared his throat on the other end. He had just returned and was going home, hoping to check on Nina. “Oh, that’s nice. Is she okay, though?” Carla sighed, “I hope so….. oh, my God!” She screamed, throwing her phone and bag to the couch as she ran towards an unconscious Nina on the floor. “Nina! Nina! Nina!” She called out. Seeing there was no response, she jumped to pick up her phone. Xander was still on the line, worrying about what had happened. “Please let me call you back, Xander. Nina just passed out.” She didn’t wait for his response before she ended the call and dialed 911. The ambulance arrived quickly, and they took Nina to the hospital. Xander joined not too long after. Carla had put a call through to Tania, and she was already on her way.
