Harper's brows furrowed as she glanced instinctively at Benjamin. She said, "No thanks, since you two already made plans, you go ahead and eat."
Benjamin's expression turned somewhat somber. "Join me for dinner, huh?"
"No need, you go ahead with Ms. Madison. I just happened to pass by here, thinking if you were free, we could head back together. But since you already have plans with Ms. Madison, I'll just head back on my own," Harper replied. With a faint smile, she waved goodbye to Dorcas and swiftly turned away.
In that instant Harper turned, the smile on her face vanished.
Benjamin followed suit in the next moment, reaching out to take her hand. In a low voice, he said, "Shall we go downstairs together?"
Harper remained silent, neither pulling away from his grasp nor resisting, allowing him to lead her. The three of them descended in the elevator together.
Benjamin personally escorted her to the car, holding the door open for her. "Shall I have Annie accompany you for dinner? What would you like to eat? I'll make the arrangements."
"No need, don't worry about me. Ms. Madison is still waiting for you, so hurry up and go. Bye!"
With a casual wave of her hand, Harper instructed the driver to start the car. After a while, she told the driver, "Let's head to the hospital first."
She went to spend time with Eleanor. On the way, Harper purposely stopped by a pastry shop to buy Eleanor's favorite treats.
Upon arriving at the hospital, she chatted with Eleanor for a while before specifically mentioning Benjamin, saying that he had been busy these past few days, which was why he couldn't come to visit. Eleanor expressed understanding, noting the time and urging Harper to go back.
As for dinner, Annie had prepared spaghetti. The two of them ate in silence.
Annie had long noticed her demeanor but had initially planned to wait for Harper to speak up. However, as time passed without any indication from her, Annie finally asked, "Not going to talk to me about it?"
Harper glanced at her, offering no
extra reaction. It wasn't until after finishing her food that Harper spoke. "It's just that Benjamin has this really close friend from college, and they happen to be collaborating at the moment. Lately, every time logo to the Martin Group, I run into the two of them together, and I can't help but feel that we have very little to talk about."
There was almost no common ground between them, and it seemed like the only topics they discussed were related to the baby, Eleanor, or matters concerning the Martin family. Apart from that, their personal interactions were very limited.
After hearing this, Annie nodded
understandingly. "If there's no topic,
you can always create one. But if his friend really knows her stuff, she should keep her distance from Benjamin, especially since he's married. If she's aware of his marital status and still doesn't know her boundaries, then she has ulterior
motives."
"It's their business. As long as he handles it, I don't want to get too involved," Harper replied. It wasn't Dorcas she was initially concerned about. It was just her self-doubt about the communication between Benjamin and herself. As for how Dorcas felt about Benjamin, that was Dorcas' business, not something Harper should worry about.
A confident woman wouldn't resort to suspicion.
That had always been Harper's
mindset. However, with Dorcas practically monopolizing Benjamin's time due to the project, Harper had been quietly enduring. She told herself it was just work demands and tried to avoid the Martin Group asmuch as possible. Out of sight, Out of mind.
So the next two days passed easily until a call came from the Martin Manor. Paul asked Harper and Benjamin to come over for dinner, as they hadn't visited in a while.
Harper had to take the initiative to call Benjamin, conveying Paul's message and asking, "Shall we go together, or should I go first?"
