CHAPTER LXXXI
~~~
Sophia stared at the smile on Saige’s lips, a tiny, selfish part of her, that she never knew existed in her, telling her to tell Saige it was her fiancee she loved. It told her to snatch the smile away from her. “It’s no one,” Sophia replied before she could do or say something she would regret.
She didn’t understand why she was suddenly behaving like that. Maybe, that was how love worked…?
“But what you were search-,”
Sophia cut her off. “It’s nothing serious,” She turned her back to her.
Saige was aware Sophia was lying. She clearly knew who Sophia was in love with and she hated to think of it. She had only asked her who it was because she wanted confirmation but it seemed Sophia’s reply didn’t matter because her body language was enough to clear Saige’s doubt.
So, Chase hadn’t told Sophia he loved her? Saige raised a brow at the question. That had to be why Sophia was searching up for answers to why he hadn’t reciprocated the words.
Saige opened her mouth to say something but halted when her eyes fell on the gift box on the reading table. “You still haven’t opened the gift I gave you yet?” Disbelief laced her words and voice. “Ouch. That hurt more than I thought it would,”
“I’m sorry,” Sophia turned to Saige, obviously sorry. “I didn’t mean to ignore it just like that. I had a lot going on, and well, I-”
Saige cut her in. “Are you still upset with me?”
“I don’t know, honestly,” Sophia said. “I- I just find it hard to understand why you would really think of me as an obstacle between you and Chase when he -” Sophia almost choked on her last words. “When he -he’s already marrying you. I don’t find anything to be insecure about,” She looked down at her feet, unable to look at Saige.
It was finally time to come out in the open and end the silent, internal rivalry between them. “Is it Chase you love?”
Sophia’s head snapped up, and she looked at Saige in the eye.
When Sophia didn’t say anything, Saige continued. “I always knew it. I knew it when I caught a glimpse of your search that you love him. You don’t need to lie,”
“Then why did you ask in the first place?” Sophia asked.
“Because I needed confirmation!” Saige snapped, and Sophia flinched. “I needed to be sure you weren’t being an actual betrayer by falling for a betrothed man!”
“Don’t talk about me being a betrayer because that’s not who I am!” Sophia retorted back, her anger coming up in waves. “Don’t call me that because I have never tried to kill someone I claim to be friends with out of jealousy,”
Saige’s voice went octaves lower, and she asked in disbelief. “Are you calling me a betrayer?”
“If your conscience tells you that you’re one, then listen to it,” Sophia replied.
“Are you out of your mind, Sophia?” Saige asked. “You just called me a betrayer,”
“I didn’t call you one, Saige. Don’t put words in my mouth,” She sounded fearless on the outside, but deep down, a fear of Saige was brewing in her. Saige had tried to kill her twice. She wouldn’t think twice before trying it again because they were both alone in her room where it would be easy for Saige to finish her off and run away.
Saige stepped closer to Sophia, snarling at her. “Well then if you think I’m a betrayer, fine, you’re free to think so. I just want you to know that I won’t hesitate to eliminate whatever tries to come between my fiancee and I, and if you’re thinking of doing so, Sophia, you better back down before it’s too late,” She snapped her fingers. “We both know how I can be if you look back at those two times I’ve tried to kill you. Be warned, I won’t ever give up,”
“You’re really out of your mind,” Sophia whispered.
“I’m not out of my mind, Sophia,” Saige seethed out. “I’m just claiming back my territory,”
Sophia scoffed. “As if he would ever claim you,”
That was the last straw.
Saige hurled herself towards Sophia. “You bi-,”
She was cut off by the sound of the door opening, and Valerie walked in with a worried look on her face.
“Is everything alright in here?” She asked, her eyes darting between Saige, who looked like she was about to combust out of anger, and Sophia, who looked indifferent. “I was passing by, and I heard your voices,”ConTEent bel0ngs to Nôv(e)lD/rama(.)Org .
“Yeah,” Sophia passed Valerie a tight-lipped smile. “Everything is okay,”
“Yeah,” Saige faked a smile and tucked her hair behind her ear. “I’ll leave now,” Without saying anything else, she headed for the door.
She walked past Valerie and was out of the door.
Valerie peeled her eyes away from Saige’s retreating figure to Sophia. “You sure everything was okay in here?”
Sophia nodded, her smile not falling off. “Yeah. Just a little argument friends normally have,”
“It’s obvious you both aren’t friends,” Valerie walked towards Sophia. “Is this about Don?”
“No,” Sophia rushed out immediately. “I -I’m sorry, but if you can, please excuse me. I’ve already missed a few minutes of my lectures,”
Valerie smiled and cupped Sophia’s cheek. “Sure then. I’ll take my leave now. Take care, Hun,”
Valerie left.
Sophia slumped on her chair and fisted her hands, bringing them to her racing heart, the look of disdain in Saige’s eyes for her not wavering off her mind as well as the conversation they had.
Sophia never knew she had that part of her in herself. It seemed to have just started existing the moment she realized she loved Chase and the only person that would face it was Saige because she was the only one against her feelings.
Sophia knew there and then that a battle line had been drawn between she and Saige.
A love battle was going to wage between the both of them, and Chase was the prize.
