Who did it?

Chapter 62 Who did it

XANDER’S HOME, NEW YORK “Will you stop tormenting that phone already,” Jace said with a groan. “You were the same person who gave her a break. Yet you keep calling like she is in some trouble.” Xander rolled his eyes and dropped the phone. “She just got discharged. I am just trying to know how she is doing.” “Let her be for just a day, bro. I promise it won’t kill you. Stop making yourself appear so desperate.” “Why don’t you just say to my face that I am desperate.” “Well, you said it yourself.” Xander picked up the throw pillow next to him and tossed it at him. Jace dodged it, smirking. “Best bet I will have your neck broken.” Jace cackled, rubbing at his nose. “I must say, how you acted recently had me wondering where my actual brother is. I have never seen you so livid.” Xander shook his head. “I was expecting you to be like that. How can you be comfortable with the company going into flames like that? Do you know letting it hold on for too long could have pushed the victim into doing something drastic? How can you keep something like that away from me?” “Carla told me to…..” “That is still no excuse.” “She assured me Nina would be fine under her watch. How am I supposed to know that it would have such an effect on her health?” “Ask me that again, and I might be generous enough to respond.” There was a heavy threat underlying Xander’s words. Jace whined under his breath. “So, what is it with you and Nina? Why was she not answering your calls?” He sat up at the question. “That is something that bothers me. Someone sent Nina a message from my line with the content that I want nothing to do with Nina.” “Were you drunk when you sent it?” “Even if I did when drunk. Shouldn’t the record be on my phone? I have no traces of it.” “That is strange. So Nina got pissed because of it?” “You need to have read the message. Anyone will act that way, too. I would never do such a thing, even if someone hypnotized me. Something isn’t right, and it is obvious that a mischievous person is toying around with me. First, it was the message and the bullying at work. What would anyone have against Nina?” Jace wanted to say it could be Dawn, but he has no evidence to support his claim. He bites down on his tongue instead. “People can be funny. She is doing well for the company, and they are probably jealous.” “They have lost their minds. Anyone who wants recognition should work for it. I will deal with anyone who tries such rubbish ever again.” “You do that.” He urged. Xander’s phone rang, and he reached for it eagerly, thinking the caller was Nina. It turned out to be Dawn. He huffed, putting the phone back down. “Why aren’t you answering? Who is it?” Jace asked. “Dawn.” He replied with no enthusiasm. “So?” “I am not in the mood to talk to her.” A clownish gaze crossed Jace’s face. “Since when? I thought you two couldn’t do without each other?” Xander flared his nose and glared at him. “Do you know something? I shouldn’t be talking to you, too. You are only allowed in my space because you at least saved some screenshots before someone got smart enough to clear the group chat. But as for Dawn, I will give her a piece of my mind. I called to ask her again if anything was happening in the company. She said nothing was on.” “Probably because she enjoyed seeing Nina being humiliated.” “Do you always have to sound so spiteful? Dawn might be everything else, but feeding on other people’s misery is not her thing.” Jace snorted in disagreement, but he dropped the discussion. “Were you sent the image of those who started the gossip?” “Hmmn,” Xander responded, though absent-minded, as he stared intently at his phone. “Did someone put them up to it, or were they just being callous?” “They didn’t say anything. They would have said the person’s name since their job was at risk. It’s just them being silly.” “Can I have a look?” “Sure, the HR sent their resumes to my mail. You can check the laptop.” Jace opened the laptop eagerly, just as he had suspected. One of the offenders closely resembled the lady he saw Dawn talking to. He glanced at Xander to see if he was still engrossed with his phone. Jace brought out his phone and took a quick picture. “Surprising, right?” Xander said. He mumbled. “Yes, I guess.” “Let’s go somewhere. Anywhere.” “Why all of a sudden? You hardly want to leave the house, but here you are, choosing to go anywhere.” Xander massaged the back of his neck. He knows too well from Dawn’s persistence that she wouldn’t hesitate to show up at his door with a sob story, which he can’t deal with now. “Moreover, it’s late already. Let’s play some games and go to bed.” Jace suggested. “How are you always comfortable settling inside my home when you have yours? Let’s go to yours for a change,” Xander said. His brother held a suspicious look. “I knew there was something fishy. What are you running from?” “I will be either forced to put a call through to Nina or be faced with Dawn’s presence.” “Is she coming?” “I won’t be surprised if she appears now.” As if on cue, the doorbell rang. Xander and Jace stared at each other with obvious shock on their faces. “Is she a little psychic or something?” Jace inquired. Xander scoffed. “How would I know that?” “Go answer the door.” “Not on your life. You do it.” “Are you that scared of her?” “Do I have reasons to be?” “Then go open it.” “Jace, you are the settler. Go open the door.” Xander ordered. Jace shook his head. “Just in case you are unaware. That is bullying. But I will open it.” He said, heading to the door. He blinked in distaste at the sight of Dawn on the monitor before opening it begrudgingly. “Xander!” She cooed and moved past Jace like he didn’t exist. Xander was already on his feet with both hands in his pocket and a disapproving glare. “Why are you here, Dawn?” Dawn pouted. “I have been calling and texting. You haven’t replied any.” “Shouldn’t that be enough of a message I am not interested in responding to?” “Why? It’s not as if I did anything wrong. I get that you are angry, but I am not the HR. Anyway….” She yawned. “You can tell me all that got you angry. I am heading to your room for my beauty sleep.” “Don’t!” Xander stood in her way when she moved. “Stop going into my room like you have a right to the place. Have some respect for me. And if you ever spend the night in this house, it will never be my room again. Several guest rooms use one of them. However, you will be going back home tonight. Jace and I were just about to leave the house. Jace?” “Right on it.” Jace grinned in delight. They didn’t give Dawn enough time to process her thoughts, and she quickly gets whisked out of the house. This is from NôvelDrama.Org.
