"

"Really?"

Caroline paused, tears hanging at the corners of her eyes, "You're not kidding me?"

"No joke, it's the truth."

Gilbert nodded solemnly.

Though the doctors couldn't be completely sure, even a sliver of a chance was worth trying.

"Caroline, I won't give up, and you shouldn't either, okay?"

Caroline looked up at him, silent for a long moment before finally nodding. She squeezed his hand.Content is property of NôvelDrama.Org.

"Gilbert, don't leave me alone. You're all I've got!"

"Never." Gilbert promised earnestly, "I'll never leave you..."

He felt responsible for her plight; how could he ever abandon her?

"The doctor will be making rounds soon. Maybe freshen up a bit?"

"Okay." Caroline nodded immediately, her spirits lifted somewhat, "I'll listen to you."

That evening.

When the doorbell rang, Sherilyn had just finished bathing Jenna, getting ready to read her a bedtime story.

"I'll get the door..."

"Sophia, let me."

Sherilyn stopped Sophia in her tracks and headed to the door, opening it to see Gilbert as expected.

"Sherilyn." Gilbert gave an awkward smile, his face filled with remorse. He glanced inside, "Is Jenna asleep yet?" Stepping forward, Sherilyn blocked his way.

She looked at him, her gaze indifferent, "I'd advise you not to go in."

"Sherilyn..." Gilbert's brow furrowed, "I was tied up this morning, I'll explain everything to Jenna."

"And what about next time?"

Sherilyn tilted her head up, her clear eyes unblinkingly fixed on him, her words crisp.

"Caroline's illness is serious; she can't do without you, and you'll be needed at any moment."

Gilbert's mouth fell open slightly, "It's just for now..."

"For now?" Sherilyn shook her head, her logic clear, "And how long is 'for now'? Recovery from paralysis isn't overnight."

She continued, "As long as she's not

"

.." Gilbert flinched, his guilt deepening, "Then let me go in and soothe her..."

"What about next time?" Sherilyn didn't budge, her eyebrows knitted in concern. "Can you guarantee it will never happen again?" Gilbert was taken aback, at a loss for words.

Hmph. Sherilyn let out a faint scoff, "You should realize, my agreement to your so-called proposal was for Jenna's sake. My daughter's happiness means more than your

Her tone dropped, chilling to the bone, "I won't let it go easily! Believe me, I'm capable of anything!"

The resolve in her voice made Gilbert's heart tremble.

Sherilyn raised her eyebrows, her statement resolute and undeniable, "Either leave now, while Jenna's attachment to you is still

"Mommy! Is that Mr. Gilbert?"

Before Gilbert could ponder, Jenna, with her little legs, scampered out.

"Wow!"

The little one's eyes lit up with stars upon seeing Gilbert.

"Sir, you're here! Hug!"

"Jenna, sweetie."

Gilbert's heart melted as he bent down to pick her up.

"Mr. Gilbert." Jenna nestled into his embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck, "I waited for you to tuck me in."

"Is that so?"

Gilbert glanced at Sherilyn and then carried Jenna into the room, "I'm sorry, Jenna, I'm late." Sherilyn stood frozen on the spot, after a long while, she raised her hand to rub her temples. Jenna was getting more attached to Gilbert, and it was happening at the worst possible time...
