Chapter 248 Don’t Look At Me Like That
Josephine pursed her lips while scanning Lewis’ face quietly. A long time later, she finally bowed her head, no longer wishing to look at him.
The latter tried to touch her once again, but she avoided his hand by tilting her body sideways.
Suddenly, the atmosphere went silent.
The corridor was so silent that one would have thought they were in a graveyard.
Lewis took a deep breath before calling her name softly. “Josie.”
Josephine was slightly startled upon hearing her name. She slowly raised her head to look at the familiar yet unfamiliar face belonging to the man in front of her.
He asked once again, “Do you know who I am?”
Josephine’s eyes glinted before she shook her head slowly.
After that, she quickly clambered to her feet in a state of panic before stumbling her way into her room. There, she was able to locate her phone, which was placed on a nightstand.
Josephine quickly snatched it up before she started scrolling through her contact list. Once she found Lewis’ phone number, she called it right away.
When the call went through, she heard a loud ringtone blaring from behind her.
Josephine turned around stiffly, soon noticing the same man standing behind her. The source. of the ringtone came from his chest.
It was all a coincidence. It had to be.
The woman killed the call, resulting in the ringtone disappearing after a moment.
Josephine’s hand, which clutched the phone, started trembling lightly. Her complexion went pale, but she decided to call the number again.
The phone tucked away in Lewis’ breast pocket started ringing almost immediately.
Josephine could only stare at him in shock. She watched as he fished out his phone from his pocket and showed her the screen.
The name “Josie” was displayed on the caller ID.
Josephine could only sink onto the bed, feeling drained and weary. She looked up at Lewis, who seemed very unfamiliar to her. Even the way he looked at her was unfamiliar.
A while later, the woman finally gestured, “Why did you take his phone?”
Countless emotions continued to swirl in Lewis’ eyes as he stared at Josephine unblinkingly. A
while later, he finally replied, “I am him.”
Of course, Josephine refused to believe his words. She tapped open her private chat with Lewis on Whatsapp and started a video call on the spot.
As a result, another loud ringtone sounded from the phone that was clutched in Lewis’ hand.
Josephine could feel her heart sinking in horror. She ended the video call immediately before throwing her phone away.
She refused to believe that the man in front of her was actually Lewis Alvarez.
Lewis didn’t look like that man at all.
Meanwhile, the man approached her slowly before sinking into the spot next to her. Josephine shuffled to the side immediately so that she could put some distance between herself and that
man.
Feeling his temple throbbing in irritation, Lewis suddenly gripped the woman’s chin tightly and turned her face so that she could look at him properly.
“Didn’t you say that you wouldn’t forget me?”
Boiling anger could be detected in his icy tone. Josephine shuddered instinctively, but she chose to look down without making a peep.
Lewis continued to stare at her, flames of fury already dancing in his eyes. After releasing the woman from his grip, he left the room quickly with his phone still in his hand.
Outside the room, the man called Dr. Halliday before snarling out, “I’m giving you ten
minutes to get your ass over here right now!”
The doctor shivered in fright when he heard the order. He didn’t dare to drag his feet, so he rushed to Lewis’ mansion as fast as he could with his medical kit in hand.
Ten minutes later, Dr. Halliday arrived at Styx Mansion right on time.
He asked while panting heavily, “Mr. Alvarez, has Madam woken up yet?”
The moment Dr. Halliday raised his head to look at Lewis once that question left his lips, he noticed the murderous look on the latter’s face.
He could only swallow nervously in response.
Then, the doctor entered the bedroom with his medical kit and ended up staring at Josephine, who stared back quietly. Dr. Halliday had no idea where to start, seeing as he wasn’t a specialist.
“Mr. Alvarez, should we take Miss Vance to the hospital?”
Lewis replied coldly, “What exactly happened to her? How could she forget so much in just a few days?”
Dr. Halliday explained hastily, “This could be related to her fever. Perhaps she even got triggered by other factors. There are various reasons for this, but we can only find out the details once she receives a check-up at the hospital.”
A cold bearing flared from Lewis’ form at that moment. The doctor had a feeling that if he were to get close to the fuming man, he’d definitely be on the receiving end of his wrath.
Meanwhile, Josephine didn’t understand what the men were talking about.
All she wanted to know was the whereabouts of the actual Lewis she knew. She found the fake
Lewis extremely terrifying.
The man must have sensed what she was thinking, seeing as he looked even angrier.
“What are you standing here for, then?”
Dr. Halliday regained his senses before nodding hurriedly. Then, he turned around to speak to Josephine. “Let’s go to the hospital, Miss Vance.”
The latter shook her head mutely. She gestured, “I’m not sick. I want to leave this place.”
“Where do you want to go?” Lewis asked.
“I want to go home,” Josephine gestured back.
“Home? Which home?”
Josephine was stunned once again. Lewis’ question served as a reminder that she didn’t have at
home from the start.
Alvarez Manor was never her home.
However, as long as Lewis was with her, anywhere could be her home.
Determination flashed across Josephine’s eyes as she stood up and started heading out of the room in shaky steps.
The woman felt someone gripping her wrist tightly before she could even take a few steps forward. She turned around in surprise, only to see the world spinning before her eyes. Once Josephine finally regained her senses, she realized that she was being cradled in a certain
man’s arms.
She tried struggling against his grip but to no avail.
Lewis forcibly whisked her downstairs before placing her inside the car. Then, he slammed the car door loudly.
Josephine felt very dizzy to the point that she lacked even the strength to undo her seatbelt.
After Lewis got into the car, he drove her to the hospital immediately. Ccontent © exclusive by Nô/vel(D)ra/ma.Org.
There, Josephine was forced to go through a series of mandatory check-ups. The doctor who
was in charge of those check-ups was an elderly medical professor named James Northwell. Lewis’ men had gone to his house and “convinced” him to look at Josephine’s condition despite the fact that he had already retired.
However, James’ medical skills were second to none. A few of his students were now famous professors or doctors.
Even though the old professor was wearing a pair of reading glasses, he still had to squint to study the CT picture.
Josephine could only sit there while sneaking glances at the door. Clearly, she was thinking about how to escape the room.
The woman tugged at Lewis’ sleeve meekly as James continued to study the picture. When Lewis looked at her, she started gesturing to him. “I want to use the washroom.”
“Hold it.” He rejected her request mercilessly.
Josephine pursed her lips while bowing her head. She was even more sure that the man next to her wasn’t Lewis.
Lewis would never be mean to her.
James put down the picture as well as the result slip. He proceeded to stroke his white beard.
Lewis asked, “How is she?”
The old man glanced at Josephine before he started analyzing her condition. “Based on what I saw in the picture, this young lady should be suffering from vascular cognitive impairment.”
“What does that mean?”
“Well, this is where it gets complicated. Many factors could contribute to this illness. In layman’s terms, it’s an illness that stems from brain damage. An external force could be the cause. Perhaps she was under extreme stress for a long time, triggering the dormant illness.”
Lewis cast a glance in Josephine’s direction. He was silent for a moment before asking, “She’s been very forgetful lately.”
James continued to stroke his beard. “It’s normal if she tends to forget about sad memories very quickly. Her memory is already bad from the start, so if the triggering elements are thrown into this equation, she’ll forget about them very quickly, seeing as she doesn’t want to remember them in the first place.”
“Sad memories?” Lewis continued to stare at Josephine. He let out a cold chuckle after noticing her intention to escape.
Did Josephine think of their three-year marriage as a sad memory this whole time?
The man was very sure that Josephine’s current state of memories had returned to the timeframe before her marriage with him.
Hence, Lewis asked another question. “Will she continue to be as forgetful as before?”
James just shook his head. “I’m not sure about that. There isn’t a professional verdict regarding this illness. I can only be certain once I check on her again in a few days.”
As he spoke, the professor pulled out a piece of paper and a pen. Then, he jotted down a list of medicinal herbs and other ingredients.
After receiving the list, Lewis grabbed Josephine and tried to drag her out of the room.
However, Josephine kept struggling against his grip. She didn’t want to leave with him at all.
Lewis turned around to shoot her a warning glare. That led to Josephine frowning in response. She hated that man for looking exactly like Lewis.
The dislike in her eyes was too obvious. As a result, Lewis flew into a fit of rage.
He pulled Josephine toward him while gripping her chin tightly. Then, he snarled in a low tone, “Don’t look at me like that!”
Naturally, she struggled against his grip. The woman wanted to gesture something back to him very badly, but she ended up getting scooped into the latter’s arms.
Frustration coursed through her veins, prompting her to bite down on Lewis’ shoulder immediately.
Unfortunately, the woman was too weak right now, so Lewis didn’t feel anything from that
bite.
He strode toward the car in wide steps before putting her into the backseat once again. Right after he was done buckling her seatbelt for her, she went ahead to undo it stubbornly.
Lewis grabbed Josephine’s hand immediately, his eyes already narrowed. A dangerous glint could be seen in his eyes.
“What are you doing?”
Josephine shook his hand away before signing back at him. “I want to find Lewis.”
A gust of wind whipped past Lewis at that moment. He could only stay rooted to the spot while trapping Josephine between his arms.
Both of them were very close to each other, yet at the same time, they were very far from each other.
The most tragic thing that could happen in this world was that Lewis, who was currently 29 years old, was already standing in front of Josephine, yet she insisted on tracking down his 20- year-old self.
Could she even find that version of Lewis?
The man knew very well that he could never find that version of him ever again.
