Chapter 204 Just a Rat

Lewis’ words pierced through Josephine, leaving her with a maelstrom of conflicting emotions. It was as if she was holding her breath, struggling for air in the face of hist accusations She knew she couldn’t match Lewis’ skill in turning the tables on her, leaving her tongue tied Defeated, she looked away, recognizing the futility of trying to argue when her words failed to flow.

Lewis fixed his gaze upon her, his eyes dark and penetrating The atmosphere in the room grew frigid, causing a chill to creep into Josephine’s hands and feet. She rose from her seat, attempting to escape, but Lewis forcefully pushed her back, trapping her in the chair. He accidentally pinched her wound as he gripped her wrist, and Josephine’s eyes reflected a hint of pain.

With a look of confusion, Josephine raised her head to meet Lewis’ gaze Sunlight poured in through the window, casting an enchanting halo around him. The soft beams of light traced the lines of his face, highlighting his features, while his eyes remained unfathomable, unaffected by the illumination.

Josephine struggled but could not escape. Just when she thought there was no hope, a sudden knock on the door interrupted her struggle. Her eyes widened with a glimmer of relief, and she pleaded with Lewis to release her.

Lewis did not panic. Instead, he lowered his head, sinking his teeth into her lip with force. Josephine let out a soft whimper as a sharp pain shot through her.

“Wait for me after work,” Lewis said before releasing her. Then, he turned to face the door. and uttered, “Come in.”

Josephine remained seated on the chair, unable to rise in time before the door swung open. She slid down the chair in a panic and hid under the desk. His words reverberated in her mind, leaving her

feeling suffocated and overwhelmed. She couldn’t help but wonder if he had conveniently forgotten about their divorce.

Conrad and Sophia walked in and immediately noticed the blood stain on his lips. Conrad was surprised. He asked, “Chairman Alvarez, your lips…”

Lewis calmly wiped it off with his thumb and replied, “I accidentally bit myself.”

After speaking, he sat on the chair and leaned back. His gaze fell upon them as he asked, What’s the matter?”

Conrad glanced at Sophia, signaling for her to go first. They each came here with a different purpose and had met at the door. Sophia handed the folder in her arms to Lewis and explained, “President Alvarez instructed me to deliver these to you. They are the documents regarding the merger between the overseas holding group and Alvarez Corp. The documents require your signature.”

Lewis took the folder and flipped through the documents. He said, “You can collect them

tomorrow.”

Sophia hesitantly spoke up, “He insists on having them today. Given the circumstances, he wishes to expedite the process and have them completed by tomorrow.”

Lewis shifted his gaze from the documents and directed it toward Sophia. He asked, “Miss King, is everything alright working under Kiran?”

Sophia was momentarily caught off guard and did not grasp the intention behind his question. However, she maintained a polite smile and responded, “The nature of my job remains unchanged, regardless of who holds the position of president. This is just me carrying out routine tasks. I’m simply doing my work with impartiality.”

Lewis gave her an ambiguous smirk. He skimmed through the documents and signed them sloppily with a ball pen from his table. After signing, he returned the folder to Sophia and remarked, “Miss King, keep up the good work.”

Although Sophia was unclear about what he meant by it, she still nodded as she took the

folder. “I will.”

Josephine squatted as she hugged her knees. She could only see Lewis’ slender legs up to his belt from her position. As her legs grew numb, she shifted her posture and settled on the floor. Leaning against the inner wall of the desk, she gently massaged her aching ankles.

After Sophia left, Conrad said, “Sir, the news regarding Mr. Walter on the internet is going viral. Should we do something about it?”

Lewis slid his chair backward, leaving about half a meter between him and the desk. Then, he lowered his gaze to look at the person under the desk. Josephine felt his gaze and looked up at him. She met his intense eyes and quickly buried her head between her knees, avoiding his

sight.

Conrad could not understand his actions. He testingly asked, “Is the floor not cleaned properly?”

Lewis withdrew his gaze and casually lit a cigarette. He replied, “No worries, it’s just a rat.”

Conrad was shocked to hear that there was a rat in the office. He said, “I’ll ask someone to clean the room immediately!”

“Don’t bother. What were you saying?”

“Oh, I was talking about the matter regarding Mr. Walter.” Conrad then repeated his words.

Lewis held the cigarette between his fingers and pondered for a moment before he stood up. He walked toward the ashtray and lightly flicked the cigarette. He said, “It would only exacerbate the situation if we tried to cover it up. Since that person wanted to expose Mr. Walter’s death so badly, we should give him a hand.”

Conrad looked confused as he asked, “Give him a hand? Won’t the situation spiral out of control if we do that?”

Lewis glanced at him and quizzically answered, “Conrad, what would you do if you found a fly in your food?”

“I will ask for the manager … but what does this have to do with Mr. Walter’s case?”

“Would you go to that restaurant again?”

“No, I won’t…”

“Then, what if you did not find a fly but a rat instead?”

Conrad had a face full of speculation, and a shiver went down his spine as he gave it a thought. “How could there be a rat in the food? No restaurant would make such a ridiculous mistake!”

After speaking, he suddenly understood.

Lewis said, “You can leave if you’ve understood.”

Conrad immediately nodded and replied, “I understand. I’ll get it done.”

If a situation spiraled out of hand, its reliability would greatly decrease. People would struggle to discern truth from falsehood. Accuracy would become inconsequential, and the situation. would

eventually subside. Attempting to conceal the news would only raise more suspicion. Moreover, the person behind the scenes would likely devise additional methods to uncover the

truth.

After Conrad left, the room fell silent once more. Josephine wanted to come out from under the desk, but Lewis slid the chair over and blocked her path. She pursed her lips, contemplating the possibility of squeezing through the narrow gaps, though the thought of doing so filled her with embarrassment. Nonetheless, Josephine decided to give it a try. As she gingerly poked her head out, her eyes locked with Lewis’.

At that moment, she realized the awkward position they were in. Her head stuck out between his knees, and her neck would get caught if he closed his knees. Just as Josephine was in a pinch, Lewis reached out and lifted her chin. Owned by NôvelDrama.Org.

Josephine was taken aback. Before she could react, Lewis’ cold fingers slid to her collar. He grabbed her collar and yanked her forward. Josephine was light, and he effortlessly lifted her. She grabbed his thighs in a panic and looked up at him anxiously.

His eyes were dark, and she saw lust in them. Josephine was familiar with this. She pressed her lips together and gestured, “We’re divorced.”

Lewis smirked with contempt and aloofness. He asked, “Is this how you seduce other people?”

Josephine was stunned.

Lewis continued, “Who taught you?”

Josephine’s eyes

flickered. The surge of breath in her chest coursed through her bloodstream, causing a gradual flush to spread across her face. She could not tell if she was angry or embarrassed.

Lewis stared at her flushed ears and said, “Since you failed to secure the partnership with Mr. Walter, are you intending to repay the company’s losses by doing this?”
