What Separates Me and You

Chapter 197 It Would Be Weird if He Didn’t

Seth smiled and straightened up. He reached out a hand to rub Josephine’s head, but she recoiled from him. His hand froze briefly, but he still placed it on her head.

“I’ll be going first, don’t miss me too much.” This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org: ©.

She didn’t respond.

He laughed and turned to leave, but he hobbled slightly due to his partially healed leg injury, which wouldn’t be noticeable unless one were to watch him closely. Josephine immediately rushed to the door and bolted it shut once it closed, exhaling in relief as she leaned against it. Something flashed across her eyes as she looked down at her bandaged wrist.

It was pouring heavily outside, and the roads were flooded. A car quietly came to a halt near the house that she was staying in, its wipers swiped away at the rain falling on the windshield. Conrad’s hands and feet were slightly chilly as he sat in the driver’s seat. He watched as Seth walked away holding an umbrella and quickly vanished in the rain before secretly glancing at

the man in the backseat via the rearview mirror.

“Do… Do you want to go in, sir?” he asked tentatively.

Lewis gazed at the door of the small building for some time before he turned away and coldly said, “What for?”

Conrad cleared his throat awkwardly, not knowing how to continue the topic. Why were they here then if he wasn’t going to go in? He didn’t dare say this out loud. Instead, he said, “I just saw Mr. Fairchild come out… He wouldn’t do something to Madam, would he?”

“Madam?”

“M-Miss Vance.” Conrad quickly corrected himself.

Lewis chuckled coldly. “It would be weird if he didn’t.”

“Huh?”

“Why do you think he’s still in Elysium?”

Conrad wracked his brain and tentatively said, “For Miss Alvarez?”

He felt like slapping himself in the face after saying this. If it was truly for Daphne, Seth wouldn’t have sold her off back then. But… it didn’t make sense if it was because of Josephine.

Did Seth have feelings for her? Personally, he felt that she wasn’t attractive enough for Seth to no longer value his life.

“Then he-”

“Drive.” Lewis cut Conrad off before he could finish.

Taken aback, Conrad swallowed what he was going to say and slowly drove away. The car quickly disappeared in the rain, as though it was never there. He discreetly glanced at Lewis through the rearview mirror again and was puzzled. Why didn’t he take any action even after knowing Seth’s motive and that he would seek out Josephine? Was it because he didn’t care what Seth did to her, or was it because he knew he wouldn’t? But he said so himself earlier that it would be weird if Seth didn’t do anything to her… Conrad couldn’t figure it out at all.

Giving up, he switched to a more serious topic. “By the way, sir, you’re becoming more and more famous now after attending the press conference that day with Miss Woods.”

Although Lewis was already well-known within Elysium’s social circle, his fame had expanded. to the general public, making him a hot topic. Furthermore, a majority of his fans were female.

The sound of a lighter clicking came from the backseat as Lewis lit another cigarette.

“You’re famous now and a trending hot topic,” Conrad continued, “Although Alvarez Corp’s stocks have started to rise because of this incident … don’t you need to deal with it? I’m afraid

it will cause you trouble.”

“Hmm.”

Conrad was dumbfounded. He pondered, “What did Lewis mean by “hmm’?” He had to rely on blind guessing.

Thunder and lightning filled the air as Josephine sat alone on the couch in this unfamiliar environment, her ears covered and her eyes squeezed shut. She was utterly frightened, realizing that the sound insulation of this house wasn’t as good as Styx Mansion. The thunder outside reverberated with striking clarity, each bomb-like sound seemingly coming from directly above her head. The deafening noise overwhelmed her.

She trembled on the couch, feeling helpless as she had nowhere else to go. The thunder intensified her fear, amplifying her sense of loneliness and loss. Being alone in this space frightened her more than ever before. Unlike Styx Mansion, which provided some semblance of security, this unfamiliar house left her feeling unsettled and terrified.

She desperately kept her eyes closed. The house got even darker, especially after the sun had set, making her feel even more lost. However, she could only force herself to get used to it as she only had herself to rely on from this point onward.

Suddenly, fragments of memories flashed through her mind as the thunder rumbled, causing a splitting headache. She clutched her sleeves and shakily raised her head. A bolt of lightning flashed outside the window, momentarily illuminating her pale face.

Her lips quivered as she whispered. “Mrs. Jinkins…”

Jumping to her feet, she dashed out of the house and into the downpour. She ran through the unfamiliar neighborhood, searching for its exit, completely drenched in the heavy rain. She

looked lost as she stood in the middle of the neighborhood, glancing in all directions.

The rain beat against her face, making it difficult to keep her eyes open. She fumbled around. before pulling out her phone and booking a cab using an e-hailing app,

The cab driver arrived and saw her standing in the rain, dressed in a white down jacket. Such a sight under the light of the night was frightening. “Is she a crazy person?” the driver

mumbled to himself.

After checking that the number plate was correct, she quickly opened the door and got in.

“You’re getting my car seats wet, miss,” the cab driver remarked.

Josephine jutted her lips and stammered, “S-S-Sor-ry.”

His brows knitted together, and he sighed before turning back to face his steering wheel. “To Prime Hospital, correct?”

“Yes…

The driver didn’t say anything else and headed for the hospital. With the long distance and the heavy rain, it took them almost an hour to reach the hospital. She got out of the car and dashed through the rain once again, walking briskly towards Mrs. Jinkins’ room. She was soaked through, and with each step she took, she left a trail of small puddles behind all the way to the lift. Everyone backed away from her when they saw her because her current appearance made her look like she had escaped a mental asylum.

She ignored everyone’s looks, arrived at Mrs. Jinkins’ room, and opened the door, only to find. it empty, just as before. Thinking that Mrs. Jinkins might have gone to the washroom, she rushed there, but it was empty as well. The contents of the text message resurfaced in her mind, causing a prickling sensation in her eyes, and her tears involuntarily fell.

A nurse knocked on the door and walked in at this moment. “May I know who you’re here to see, miss?”

Josephine signed frantically.

The nurse frowned and said, “I’m sorry. I don’t understand sign language.”

Josephine took out her phone and typed a barrage of words before showing it to the nurse.

Narrowing her eyes, the nurse then said, “The patient in this room? It has been a few days since she checked out of the hospital. Are you unable to contact her?”

Josephine shook her head before typing, “Then do you know where she went?”

“How would I know this?” the nurse chuckled before continuing, “If you, her friend, or relatives are unable to find her, then does it make sense that we would know where she is?”

Josephine was downcast.

“Please leave the room. It was just cleaned earlier this afternoon,” the nurse said, indirectly criticizing the water dripping off Josephine’s body.

Lowering her head apologetically, Josephine exited the room. She waited until the nurse had closed the door before taking out her phone and searching for that text. However, the text had oddly disappeared, as though she had imagined it. Lewis came to mind, so she searched for

him on Facebook and attempted to message him, despite the red exclamation mark that was

still there.
