Chapter 412
Begonia snorted coldly, her head tilted.
Joshua looked angrily at Caroline, asking, "You can see her, Grandma? Have you always been able to see her?"
"Yes. She's my friend, Begonia," Caroline replied. She then introduced them to each other. "Begonia, this is my grandson, Joshua."
Joshua and Begona glanced at each other, then quickly turned away. Begonia proceeded to ignore Joshua and draped herself over the rocking chair, chatting happily with Caroline. Joshua, on the other hand, walked under the eaves of the house while looking warily in their direction.
"What exactly is that Begonia girl, Ms. Locke?" he asked. "Is she really not a ghost? Why did she suddenly appear? Why did my grandma say that she's friends with her?"
Before Madison could reply, the viewers started expressing their own opinions.
"From the looks of it, she's probably a child. Is she Joshua's grandmother's friend who decided to stay by her side after death?"
"Seems like it."
"Her sudden appearance just now scared me to death."
"Hold on! This child is really cute and doesn't look like a ghost at all!"
"How can such a cute kid be a ghost?"
In contrast to the netizens' casual banter, Joshua was really worried.
"Will Begonia harm my grandmother, Ms. Locke?" he asked in concern. "Don't they always say that ghosts will spirit people away?"
"I'm not a ghost!" cried Begonia, standing up abruptly with her hands on her hips, her dress swaying in the wind. "I heard everything. Did you think I wouldn't be able to hear you just because you were speaking softly?"
She then addressed Caroline, "He really is stupid, Carrie! Why do you have such a stupid grandson? You should stop paying him any mind and play with me instead! It'll be just like before."
She held Caroline's hands in hers, looking cutely at her.
Caroline's gaze was soft and exasperated as she explained gently, "I'm not in good health, so I can't play with you anymore."
"But why?" Begonia asked in confusion.
"Because I'm human," replied Caroline.Exclusive content from NôvelDrama.Org.
As she spoke, she turned to look at Joshua and said, "Begonia is my friend. She won't harm me."
"Grandma..."
Caroline called out to him, "Come over here!"
Joshua moved a small chair next to
the rocking chair and sat down on it while Begonia sat on Caroline's
other side. The two of them exchanged glances, then snorted coldly at each other. Caroline just sigbed exasperatedly at their antics.
"Begonia is my friend, Josh. She's the same age as me. She's..."
She trailed off and pointed at the flowering begonia tree. "She's that tree."
In the year she was born, her father was particularly happy and planted a begonia tree in the courtyard. When she was five years old, a little girl suddenly appeared under the tree. She grew up with her, and they often played together.
"Later, when I was eight years old, my parents made money from their business and brought me to live in the city."
Before she left, she had gone looking for Begonia to say her farewells. When Begonia asked when she would be returning, she told her that she didn't know and that she'd return when she was grown up.
She still remembered that on the day she left, Begonia had stood under the begonia tree in her begonia-patterned dress, gazing pitifully at her. Begonia had even waved at her, telling her to remember to come back. But she didn't.
Caroline studied and grew up in the
city. Later on, she moved to a different city to work, where she got married and had children. It wasn't until this year, when she fell ill, that she suddenly recalled the courtyard from her childhood.
She had assumed that Begonia would have already grown up, gotten married, and had children just like her. What she hadn't expected was to see Begonia on the very night she returned to the courtyard. And Begonia was still a child, still so innocent and adorable.
