Chapter 2059
Chapter 2059
"May I sit down?" Justin's voice was polite.
"Please do."
The man sat gracefully across from him, alone and unencumbered with bodyguards. Wordlessly, the atmosphere was charged with tension.
"Mr. Salvador, a man of your stature wouldn't normally come to a place like this for coffee," Owen said, taking a deep drag of his cigarette. "This isn't a coincidence. You've been following me."
"Not at all," Justin replied, his lips curling slightly. "My wife told me about what happened at the nursing home that day. She said if you're not at your office, you'd surely be here. After all, Deputy Chief Hopkins, you're as devoted to your wife as I am to mine. No matter how far the detour, we end up in the same place." His words were so layered that only a practiced person could decipher the conversation.
"Are you married to Ms. Thompson?" Owen asked, puffing on his cigarette.Content bel0ngs to Nôvel(D)r/a/ma.Org.
"Not yet," Justin replied.
"Then calling her 'wife' is just a term of endearment. We're not the same kind of people. You wouldn't understand my situation."
Justin's jaw tightened, but he remained calm and composed. He spoke in a low voice. "Aaron Larson was suddenly arrested. Doesn't that strike you as odd?"
Owen's eyes remained indifferent. "The Savrow police are not incompetent. Justice has finally caught up with him. It's his fate."
Justin looked at him intently. "Who do you think will be next?"
The air grew thick with tension.
"How should I know?" Owen responded coolly, though his fingers trembled, causing ash to fall from his cigarette.
"Aaron had close dealings with Christopher. He helped distribute illegal drugs and amass his fortune. Even though Aaron was the president of Larson Biotech and held a significant position in Hatchbay, Christopher still sacrificed Aaron as a scapegoat. In Christopher's eyes, no one is trustworthy," Justin said, his sharp eyes narrowing. "When the job is done, the tools are discarded. Do you think Christopher sees you any differently?"
"If you have nothing else to say, I'll take my leave," Owen said, feeling the gravity of the situation.
He knew Savrow was full of Christopher's spies, and being seen with Justin would be hard to explain. Christopher was ruthless and suspicious, and he needed to stay alive to protect his wife. He was already tied to Christopher and could no longer turn back.
As Owen prepared to leave, Justin suddenly leaned forward, pressing a silver lighter into his palm. "You don't have a lighter, right? If you don't mind, use this."
Owen's eyes flickered with an inexplicable emotion. He clenched the lighter, lowered his head, and quickly left the cafe.
Justin remained seated, gazing at the bustling night scene, the man now completely gone from view.
Just then, he received a message from Bella.
[Wife: Did you see him?]
He smiled gently, his calloused fingers typing carefully on the screen.
[Justin: Yes, we talked.]
[Wife: Did it go badly? You have a high IQ, but you can be emotionally clueless.]
[Justin: Bella, if you couldn't sway him, what chance did I have?]
Justin paused, his eyes darkened.
[Justin: But I never intended to persuade him to betray Christopher.]
Bella was silent for a moment before bombarding him with five emoticons.
[Wife: You met up with him to get Christopher's attention, to make him suspicious of Owen and sow discord between them?]
[Wife: You're so wise.]
[Wife: You schemer!]
Bella seemed to channel her fourth brother, making the man laugh helplessly, his eyes full of affection. (Justin: Given the circumstances, we need to take risks. Toppling Christopher will increase our chances of success.]
At that moment, outside the cafe, a black car hidden in the shadows quietly retracted its camera from the window.
