The cost 7
Chapter 7
The next afternoon, Mia switched up her look, flagged down a cab, and headed to the courthouse. Little did she know, a pair of eyes were tracking her every move from behind the tinted windows of a sleek luxury car parked nearby. Inside, Matthew observed her, his frown deepening as he took in Mia’s freshly cut hair,
It wasn’t just her haircut that caught his attention. Mia had undergone a complete transformation. Her makeup was now minimalist yet striking. highlighting her natural beauty with an effortless touch. She wore a tailored shirt that accentuated her slender frame, tucked into a form–fitting skirt, and finished off with a pair of sharp heels. She looked every inch the polished, professional woman–a far cry from the girl he once knew.
Matthew squinted, his lips thinning into a hard line. He wondered. Was she truly this content and liberated now that our marriage is over? “The thought gnawed as him, twisting his gut.
His assistant, unable to hold back any longer, interrupted the silence, “Sir, it’s twenty past three…
Matthew cut in sharply. Are you implying I’m late!”
The assistant immediately ripped his lips, knowing better than to continue.
“Just get her in the car, Matthew finally ordered, his irritation palpable. The more he looked at Mia, the more something inside him churned.
“Yes, sir,” the assistant replied, scrambling to carry out the order.
Meanwhile, Mia stood at the courthouse entrance, growing increasingly impatient. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw John Harris, Matthew’s assistant, coming her way. During her time with the Blackwoods, John had always treated her decently.
“Madam, Mr. Reed would like to see you,” said John, motioning towards the sleek Maybach parked nearby
Mia’s eyebrows knitted together in frustration. She had spotted the car earlier but hadn’t associated it with Matthew. She wondered, ‘Has he been sitting there this whole time, watching me standing here like a tool for over half an hour? Does he really get a kick out of playing these petty game? Annoyance surged within her.
As Mia’s expression soured, John could practically feel the storm brewing. But before he could smooch things over, she was already striding toward the Maybach, her heels clicking sharply against the pavement.
Mia yanked the door open and slid inside, her voice laced with anger. “Matthew, you think that was funny?” She stared at the man sitting across from her in the backseat, his face a cold, unreadable mask.
Their eyes locked, and Mia’s irritation only deepened. “Do you have any idea how hot it is today? Or how many appointments I had to reschedule just to finalize this divorce?”
Matthew’s gaze bore into her, searching for something beneath her anger. “Are you really that eager to end this marriage
Mia let out a bitter laugh, her frustration boiling over. “What else would I be here for? Or did you come all this way just to back out at the last minute?” She was now fully convinced that he was deliberately trying to vex her, and she was done with it which strengthened her resolve to divorce
Matthew’s face darkened. “Enough playing hard to get, Mia. This is your last chance to change your mind”
“Trust me, Mr. Blackwood Leaving you is the best decision I’ve made in the last five years, Mia shot back, her voice sharp and cutting “Are you hesitating because you truly care for me or because you haven’t found a replacement blood donor for Elizabeth yet?” Her voice, usually solt, was now edged with sharpness, each word stinging his heart like thors.
Matthew’s jaw clenched, his rage barely contained. “Get out.”
Without wasting another second, Mia stepped out of the car and marched into the courthouse, her head held high.
The tension between them reached its peak as they entered and sat down to finalize the divorce. Mia signed the divorce papers without even reading them, her elegant script flowing smoothly across the page.
However, Manhew found her resolve nearly offensive. What he had once believed to be her trick was now a completely confusing mystery, which only fueled his irritation.
Passing him the pen, she simply said, “Your turn.”
He signed in silence, his icy gaze fixed on her as he declared, “I hope you don’t regret this
Mia didn’t flinch. If she had any regrets, it was that she had married him in the first place. But dwelling on the past was pointless. As she looked down at their signatures, side by side, a complex mix of relief and sadness washed over her. This chapter of her life was finally closing, and she was NôvelDrama.Org content.
