Chapter 2116
Lydia realized something was wrong and hurried towards the two men.
The two men had been arguing about money, but they suddenly felt a chilling presence and fell silent, turning to see what was causing it.
When Jesse saw Lydia, the pain from having his wrist twisted the day before resurfaced instantly. Just seeing her made his wrist throb with pain. Terrified, he exclaimed, "Please, have mercy, ma'am! We'll disappear right away!"
He turned to run but was caught by Lydia, who forcefully spun him back around. With an icy demeanor, she said, "I haven't even asked you anything yet. Where do you think you're going?"
Held by the scruff of his neck, Jesse felt as if his very lifeline was being twisted. Trembling, he quickly pleaded, "Ma'am, whatever you want to know, I'll tell you."
"Yes, yes, we'll tell you everything," added the man who had been arguing with Jesse. Having witnessed Lydia's formidable skills firsthand the previous day, he was terrified of her. Even though Lydia hadn't glanced his way, he didn't dare to run and stood there, quaking in fear.
"Did I hear you correctly, saying you were going to ask Mr. Ethan for money? Is this Mr. Ethan the same Ethan you attacked yesterday?" Lydia demanded in a grave tone.
She had only caught snippets of their conversation and guessed Ethan might be their financier. But she didn't want to jump to conclusions without getting the full story.
At her question, Jesse visibly hesitated, his gaze filled with nervousness. He and his accomplice exchanged a look involuntarily.
"Spit it out!" Lydia's patience was wearing thin, her grip on Jesse's neck tightening.
Her commanding presence was undeniable and filled with an imposing aura.Content protected by Nôv/el(D)rama.Org.
Frightened, Jesse shuddered, not daring to withhold any information. "Please, don't be angry, ma'am. I'll tell you everything."
"Quickly, then!" Lydia was running out of patience.
"Yes, yes, it was the same Mr. Ethan we confronted yesterday. He paid us to attack him and even told us not to hold back," Jesse confessed.
The other man hurriedly chimed in,
"Exactly, we're both family men, you know, not usually into this kind of business. But life's pressures. we needed the money, so we took on this difficult job."
"We also found it odd, why someone would pay to have themselves beaten up. But hey, if someone's willing to pay for such a thing, and we need the money, it works out for everyone," Jesse added in explanation.
So, it was all as Lydia had suspected, a charade orchestrated by Ethan himself! What an utterly pointless act!
Hearing the truth confirmed her suspicions, and Lydia's anger rose like steam, unable to be contained.
Disappointed beyond words with Ethan, she let go of Jesse, barking, "Get lost!"
Jesse and his companion scrambled away, but as they reached the mouth of the alley, they hesitated, looking back in panic. "Mr. Ethan?"
Mr. Ethan?
Hearing the name made Lydia's
heart skip a beat. She turned around to see a man in a sleek silver-grey suit, standing tall and handsome in the morning light, a conspicuous bruise marking his cheek.
Jesse glanced back, and seeing Lydia watching, panicked even more. Without another word to Ethan, he hurried away with his partner.
The truth was out, and what happened next was between Lydia and Ethan alone, no longer their concern.
Lydia fixed her gaze on Ethan, her eyes ablaze with the fury of betrayal and anger.
