The Billionaire’s Ex-Wife (Her Ex-Husband’s Regret) Chapter 38

Chapter 38

Cassie.

1 open my eyes and find myself in a vast meadow filled with colorful wildflowers swaying gently in the warm breeze. The sky above is a brilliant shade of blue, with cotton-like white clouds dancing lazily across the horizon. In the distance, a splendorous mountain looms, its snow-capped peak glistening in the sunlight. As I take in my surroundings, I noticed the sound of birds singing sweet melodies and the gentle rustling of leaves in the nearby trees.

Behind me is a body of water, clear and sparkling. It’s inviting me in, to dive and swim like a mermaid like I’ve always

wanted.

Is this heaven? I ask.

If it is heaven, then it can only mean one thing.

“Mommy!”, I hear Kai’s gentle voice call out to me.

I turn around, but I cannot see him.

“Cassie!” this time it’s Ethan.

They are calling me as if they’re scared that I’m going away forever.

“What is this place? Where am I?’

Suddenly, I remember. I am in the hospital for observation. Then somebody came in and injected something in my IV. I felt dizzy. I knew then that he was there to kill me.

He looks really familiar, like I’ve seen him before, I just couldn’t remember when or where.

He’s trying to kill me? Why? What have I done to him?

I have to get out of this place! I have to go back! I can’t die like this, even if this is heaven. I can’t leave Kai alone. I have to know why there is a threat to my life. And I need to make sure that Kai will be safe from them.

Then suddenly, I feel a surge of electricity coursing in my chest

“Aargh!”

It gives me a jolt, and then everything around me starts fading.

Beep. Beep. Beep..

1 slowly open my eyes.

“She’s back.” Exclusive © content by N(ô)ve/l/Drama.Org.

I find that I am surrounded by doctors and nurses. I see that there’s a defibrillator beside me.

“That explains everything. From the glimpse of heaven, to the electric jolt.

1 flatlined.

Chapter 38

I weakly push away the hand that attempts to reinsert the IV into my arm. I resist with whatever strength I have left.

“It’s okay,” the doctor says. “We have changed it. The other one has been sent to the lab for examination.”

I simply nod, sighing in relief.

“You can rest now. We will coordinate with security. Don’t worry

After the doctor leaves, Ethan approaches me. Tears running down his cheeks.

“Cassie” he breathes.

in his

“Ethan, 11 am unable to finish my statement Ethan leans forward and covers my lips with his. I can taste his tears lips. There is nothing romantic about this kiss. It is a kiss filled with desperation, a kiss of a man who thought he had lost everything.

When he pulls away, he leans his forehead against mine.

“I will kill him!” he whispers. “I will kill whoever did this to you!”

Ethan is not capable of killing anyone. But rt at that moment I have no doubt in mind that he means what he just said.

“I can’t think of any reason why someone would want me dead, Ethan.”

“Did you see his face

I’nod. “I don’t know him, but he looks really familiar. Like I’ve seen him somewhere before.”

I close my eyes, trying my damnedest to recall his face. I’m pretty sure today isn’t the first time I’ve seen him.

“Ssssh. Don’t stress yourself. Just rest. We will take care of everything. You can talk to the detectives later.”

“What about Kai? Does he know?”

Ethan shakes his head. “I just sent him back to the hotel with Lyn when it happened,” he assures me. “Meanwhile, I will send security to guard you here round the clock.”

I reach out for his hand and give it a squeeze. Having him around gives me so much comfort. No one has ever made me feel

so safe

“I think after this, it’s safe for you to go back home, Ethan says. Even if it’s just for a short while, until the culprit is caught.”

“What about King’s Court? I was supposed to work on King’s Legend.”

“Nothing is more important than your life, sweetheart,” he insists. “Don’t do it for me. Just think about Kai

“But we still need to catch this guy,” I say. “How can we do that if I’m not here. I promised Detective Moran that I will be (available anytime they need my help to catch this culprit.”

“You can perfectly do that over the phone, or over video calls?

than if this guy is really after me. lie would get me wherever am, I argue “And didn’t you say you will increase my security detail? I thank that would be enough”

Ethan sighs. He knows me well And he knows that when I decide on something, I hardly change my mind.

Chapter 38

“Okay, but if another incident occurs, we’re out of here.”

“Okay.”

A day later, I am packing, getting ready to be discharged from the hospital when the door opens and an unexpected visitor appears in my doorstep.

My heart skips a beat as I turn to see my father standing in the doorway, his expression a mix of anger and disappointment. It has been years since I last saw him, and the sight of him now fills me with mixed emotions I cannot quite decipher.

“Father…”

He closes the door behind him.

“You’ve been here for a few days and you really have no intention of even coming to visit me?” he asks in an accusing tone.

Seriously? That’s the first thing he says to me after all these year

“I was under the impression you wanted nothing to do with me after Megan burned our old house down, and you blamed. me for it. I thought you don’t want to see me anymore when I got hospitalized after the fire and you didn’t even visit me. You only called to blame me for losing the house.”

My father frowns. “That house was your mother’s. It was the only thing that we had together to remind me of the good life that I had with her.”

Huh? The only thing?

“What about me?” I ask. “Am I not part of what you had with her Am I not a memory of the good life that you had with her?”

He falls quiet. My father has never been affectionate towards me But he provided for me, and he never physically hurt me. Even though he always took Megan’s side, and it seemed more like he treated her better, he was still a good father to me. And that was good enough for me.

But when he blamed me for Megan’s fault, and he never even cafed that I was recovering from an injury in the hospital. 1 thought that was it. I shouldn’t try so hard for my own father to care about me. I didn’t even tell him about Kai. I was scared that he won’t even be interested in his own grandson. Besides, he’d tell Kayden about Kai if he knew. My father worships the land that Kayden walks on.

I sigh. “What made you come here, Dad? Please just tell me. I need to go soon. I had to go to the police station to give a

statement.”

“Speaking of that,” he says. “Why were you with Kayden during that accident?”

“You came here to ask that?”

“Why else would I come here?”

I shrug. “I don’t know. Maybe you should ask me how I was doing?”

“I can see that you are doing just fine,” he snaps. “But do you know who else is in the hospital right now?”

“Who

Chapter 38

“Megan!” he replies angrily. She lost a lot of blood! It’s a good thing that one of the maids found her in the bathroom with a slit on her wrist, or we would be having a funeral!”

“She… she attempted to commit suicide?”

1 stare at my father in shock. Megan, my sister, tried to take her own life? Despite everything she had done to me, I never wished for her to die.

“Yes!” he replies, “And I think it’s because of you! She must have been distraught when she heard that you and Kayden were cheating on her.”

“Cheating on her?” I echo. “Whatever gave you that idea?”

“Why else were you together in that accident?”

“That doesn’t mean we were having an affair!” I defend myself. would never steal another woman’s man! But on the contrary, I seem to remember that Megan didn’t do me the same favor. Didn’t Kayden leave me for Megan four years ago?”

“Leave you for her? Have you forgotten? Yours was just an arranged marriage. Kayden married you to prevent damage to his reputation after you slept with him! But Megan has always been the one he loved. She was waiting for Kayden to propose to her. And then you come back to town and yo steal Kayden from her?”

I listen to my father’s words, feeling a mix of shock and anger bubbling inside me. How could he accuse me of something sof despicable? How could he believe Megan’s lies?

With a deep breath, I look my father straight in the eye. “You know that’s not true, Dad. Kayden and I are just business colleagues. Nothing more. Megan’s suicide attempt has nothing to do with me.”

But my father’s eyes remain unmoved, cold and accusing. His rigid stance and unwavering gaze make me feel like a criminal

on trial.

“You are

not going to ruin Megan’s dream of becoming Mrs. Kayden Steele, do you understand?” my her says. “You are not going to ruin my family!”

Tears peer in my eyes. “But what about me, Dad?” I ask. “Why are you always thinking the worst of me? Why won’t you even give me the benefit of the doubt?”

“Megan has always been a good kid. She was almost perfect my father replies. “Her life has revolved around Kayden. So, please! I am begging you. Do not take that away from her!”

“I told you. I have nothing to do with her suicide: If her relationship with Kayden has gone awry, it certain is not because of

me.”

“Stay away from Kayden. Megan is your sister. Do not be the cause of her heartbreak! I don’t want something like this to ever happen again!”

As I listen to his words, I find myself torn between sadness and anger. Those accusations were deep and uncalled for. It’s especially frustrating coming from someone who should know me better than anyone else. Hearing this makes me wonder if I’m really my father’s flesh and blood. Because he always seems inclined to take Megan’s side over me.

I fight the tears that are peering from my eyes. “Don’t worry, Dad” I raise my chin to him. “I think I should go back to staying away from all of you!”

“You walk away! fine! That’s what you’re good at anyway. Instead of apologizing, you are going to walk out on us again.”

“Apologize? I can’t believe him. “What do you want me to apologize for? Alright fine! I’m sorry that Kayden offered me a

ride, and that we got into an accident together! I am sorry that I was busy with my own problems, while my sister wasn’t strong enough and she thought about ending her life!” This time, I really let the tears roll down my cheeks. “What else, Dad? Would you want me to pay for Megan’s hospital bills, too?”

“If that’s what you want, go ahead. Anyway, you’re fond of flaunting your wealth and accomplishments.”

I groan. “Fine! If money was so important to you, then fine! Just send me the bill and leave me the hell alone!”

My father smirks, and then he turns around to leave. But before he exits the room, he turns to me and says, “Don’t hate me for this. I am not just protecting Megan. I am also doing this for he takes a deep breath. “My future grandchild.”

My eyes widen in disbelief. “Grandchild?”

“Megan is pregnant,” he replies. “Please, whatever you have with Kayden, end it. For the baby’s sake. Do not let Megan’s child grow up without a father. I believe you are hot that kind of a monster.”

And then he exits the room, leaving me dumbfounded.

As my father’s words sink in, my world comes crashing down around me. Megan is pregnant with Kayden’s child? And he told me that he wanted me back… that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. And the fool I am, I actually believed

him!

I am not even aware that tears are rolling down my o

ychecks.

I need to get away from him… from all of them from this damn place!

I take my phone and dial Ethan’s number. He answers in one ring.

“Are you okay?” he asks, concern all over his voice.

“Ethan…” I whisper. “Take me home now.”
