chapter 140 Thirty-Eight
Evelyn’s POV
My body was killing I when I woke up, every muscle aching like I ran a marathon. Stretching, I roll
and come nose to nose with Thaddeus. His eyes wide open staring back me and I couldn’t help the
squeal of fright opening my eyes to his green ones so close. He says nothing just watching me sending
a shiver up my spine with how hollow he looked, empty and emotionless. My heart pounding in my
chest before palpitating. Fear something, I had grown used to, but it never got any more welcoming,
you could never get used to the feeling, even though fear I regularly felt it, it never became familiar or
comfortable, just there waiting to flood me when I least expected it.
I felt a knot form in my stomach and wriggled away from him. “Do I scare you?” he asks his
eyebrows furrowing. “Sometimes” I answer honestly. Well, most of the time he does but usually I can
get rid of the fear or push it aside, look past it even. This felt different though. The fear felt different, it
wasn’t what he could do to me, but rather what he could make me do to myself. That was a different
level of fear knowing he had that sort of control, that level of power over me. It’s one thing influencing
someone’s actions, another when they a vulnerable and unable to help themselves, like the puppet on
the strings and right now I was his puppet, he got to choose what happened next. The ultimate control
and knowing he had that sort of control over me, scared me. He could ask me to kill myself and I
wouldn’t be able to stop myself from doing it.
“Am I scaring you now?” he asks rolling on his back.
“Yes” I tell him. He seems to think, and I go to sit up and get off the bed when his hand grabs my
wrist.
“Lay back down” he answers, his voice leaving no room for argument and I do as I am told.
“Why do I scare you?” he asks, letting go of my wrist. How could he ask that? How does he not
see anything wrong with his actions?
“Because I am your puppet, your little breakable toy you can do what you want with.”
“You don’t trust the decisions I make for you?” he asks still looking up at the roof.
“No, why would I. You made me wet myself,” I tell him, my cheeks burning just at the thought of it.
“But did it work? Will you run again?” he asks.
“You mean did you succeed in humiliating me, yes you succeeded. Nothing more degrading then
be deprived of something so basic,” I tell him and his head snaps to the side looking at me.
“But will you run?” he asks again this time putting his demand behind it, but I don’t even fight
against it.
“First chance I fucking get,” I spit at him.
Thaddeus growls before jumping on me, pinning me beneath him. I try to kick him off, but he just
presses between my legs, his face barely an inch off mine.
“You will never leave my side, Evelyn, and even if you somehow managed it, you would come
back. The mate bond would see to that,” he tells me. I shake my head, his hands gripping my wrists
tighter pushing them into the mattress.
“I hate you,” I tell him, and he smiles sadistically. I could feel the darkness within him, consuming
him.
“And I love you,” he says, his eyes glowing hypnotically back at me.
“You have a funny way of showing it. Do you treat everyone you love like this, or is that part of you
reserved for me only?” I tell him.
Thaddeus growls his nose running along my jaw to my neck. “They know their place is beside me,
they know I would never do anything to bring them harm intentionally, yet you disobeyed me. I didn’t
think you would be stupid enough to go alone after that woman threatened you and put yourself in
unnecessary danger.”
I know I shouldn’t play with fire but fuck it. I already been burned before.
“The only time I find myself in danger is when I am around you,” I tell him. His grip tightens before
he pushes off his arms sitting up, his hands shaking as he clenches them at his side and for a second, I
thought he was going to punch me. The darkness inside him, eating away the good parts turning them
dark.
That’s when I realised something, all this talk about me being his puppet yet he was also a puppet
to the darkness, a puppet to his own mind. Cruel and unforgiving just as he is to me.
It didn’t change anything though; he still did what he did. Thaddeus breathing becomes heavy, the
lights flickering as he fought against himself. He wanted to hurt me, and I knew he would enjoy it when
does because there was a part of him that enjoyed others pain, enjoyed their fear.
When was the last time he fed? I mentally questioned myself. The darkness was always worse
when he hadn’t fed for a while, but he fed off me the other day, surely his bloodlust wasn’t that bad?
His entire body trembling and I gulped my mouth suddenly feeling like I was trying to swallow down
sand. His eyes turning to pitch black orbs as they snapped toward me. The lights flickering before the
entire house shook like an earthquake.
“Run,” he said, and I stared stunned before he screamed. “Fucking run,” He bellowed, and I
jumped off the bed but not quick enough before he lunged at me. His hands gripping my ankle ripping
me to the ground. Where were they? Did they leave?
“Orion, Ryland” I scream petrified. Turning on my side, I use my other leg kicking him as hard as I
could in the face. He lets go and I scramble to my feet before being tackled and thrown violently
through the barrier, plummeting to the ground below.
Everything moving in slow motion, and I thought I was going to die when I felt him grab me, ripping
me toward him before turning so he was underneath me as we hit the floor below. Landing on his
chest, knocking the wind out of me. For a second his grip was gentle, his eyes their vibrant hypnotic
green before something inside him flipped going to the monster, his grip tightening around my waist
and I feel the air leave my lungs.
“Thaddeus” I choke out. His head turning to the side, this wasn’t him. This was something
demonic, like looking into the eyes of the devil, his eyes bottomless pits of darkness threatening to suck
me into their void.
“Thaddeus” I gasp, and I can feel my ribs cracking as the last bit of air leaves my lungs. I scratch
his face, needing air as it is being squeezed out of me. My hand dropping as I become weaker and
weaker. The gross feeling of my eyes rolling into the back of my head.
When suddenly he lets go, his arms unravelling around me and I gasp for air, my eyes fluttering
open to see Ryland and Orion both gripping his arms prying them off me.
“Run Evelyn” Orion yells to me and I force myself to move, running for the front door. I swing it
open and freeze. I couldn’t take another step, physically couldn’t do it, I tried everything but all I did was
give myself a worse headache and coat myself in sweat. I could hear things crashing around before I Ccontent © exclusive by Nô/vel(D)ra/ma.Org.
hear Ryland’s voice making me eyes dart to him.
“Shit” he says when he realises, I can’t leave the house.
“You’re going to have to run with her” Orion grunts to Ryland before being flung into the fireplace
as they try and hold him back.
“It could kill her” Ryland yells to him, just as Thaddeus grips Ryland’s throat making me scream.
Thaddeus eyes snapping toward me near the door. His eyes flashing like he is trying to remember who
I am, fighting with himself, his head snapping towards Ryland and his grip lets go as he gains control
slightly before I feel the darkness consume him again. That split second distraction enough to get Orion
back on his feet as he tackles Thaddeus to the ground.
What the fuck is going on? I just don’t get it, I didn’t understand how he could get this bad, just shift
personalities like this, one second calm the next he was like a hurricane.
