Skylar immediately called Joe.
Joe answered the call quickly. “Did you see my message? You should be sleeping at this hour. Why are you awake?”
It was noisy in the background, like those in an airport. It seemed like he was on a plane, and there were announcements about safety precautions before takeoff.
Hearing Joe’s voice, Skylar felt more at ease. “Are you on a plane?”
“Yes, we’re about to take off. I’ll be back as soon as I’m done. If anything happens, just call me.
Skylar could faintly hear the flight attendant reminding passengers to turn off their phones or switch them to airplane mode. So, she asked quickly, “When will you land?”
“In about eight hours. Get some rest. I’ll call you when I land,” Joe replied, then hung up.
The dial tone echoed in her ears. Skylar just stared at her phone, lost in thought, before pressing a hand to her head.
It was just a nightmare, after all.
She barely slept the rest of the night, not feeling sleepy.
So, she picked up a couple of books to read. Before she knew it, morning had arrived.
After breakfast, Joe called her. “I’ve landed and am on my way to the hotel now.”
Skylar finally felt her worries melt away. It seemed she had been overthinking things. She smiled and said, “I’m having breakfast. Did you get something to eat on the plane?”
“I did. I’ll have some coffee when I get to the hotel,” Joe replied, his voice carrying a hint of exhaustion.
An eight–hour flight would tire anyone out, especially since he would likely have to adjust to the time difference quickly and get straight to work.
“Take a nap in the car if you can. Don’t worry about things at home or with Grandma; I’ll take care of them. I’m going to finish my breakfast now,” Skylar said, preparing to hang up so as not to take up more of his time.
But Joe suddenly asked, “Did you miss me?”
She immediately pretended not to hear him and quickly ended the call.
Even though they agreed not to divorce and were now like any couple in a relationship, some words were still difficult to say.
Joe then sent her a message. “You heartless little one. It seems like you didn’t miss me.”
Skylar looked at the words “heartless little one” and couldn’t help but smile before replying, ” Then, did you miss me?”
She didn’t expect a response, but he replied, “Yes.”
That simple word dispelled all the restless thoughts that had plagued her through the night.
A faint smile curved her lips as she replied, “I’ll wait for you to come home.”
After breakfast, she managed to sleep for three hours.
But Skylar received a call from Aiken.
“Were you sleeping? Did I wake you?”
Skylar just said, “No, I didn’t sleep well last night, so I took a nap and just woke up.
“Here’s the thing–I’ve been looking into the person behind Molly as you wanted. But it turns out that Molly has almost never met this person face to face. They’re very cautious, using only internet calls and disposable phones.
“Also, none of the prominent families in Jipsburg seem to be dealing in antiquities recently. So, I suspect this person won’t make any moves in the near future, or perhaps they’ve already left Jipsburg.
‘As for Madam Viola’s brother, I’ve found some information suggesting that he died abroad, but it was so long ago that it’s hard to confirm.”
Aiken shared the information he had uncovered over the past few days.
At this point, it was clear that there wasn’t much more to find as they had no more clues to follow.
Skylar wasn’t surprised by Aiken’s findings. After all, Joe and Alexander’s investigations had reached the same conclusion–the person had vanished without a trace.
However, she didn’t expect to hear about Viola’s brother dying abroad.
After thanking Aiken, Skylar suddenly remembered that she hadn’t been in touch with Simona recently. So, she asked, “How’s Simona been lately?”
“She’s been feeling a bit down these past few days. Actually, I was hoping you could help with something. If you have the time, could you join her for a meal?” Aiken asked. Content © NôvelDrama.Org 2024.
