As soon as Natalie opened the door, a strong smell of alcohol hit Skylar, making her glance
into the room.
“Have you been drinking?”
Natalie hiccuped, the alcohol smell even stronger “Yeah, I’ve been drinking. It’s boring to drink alone, so I called you over to drink with me and cheer up together.”
Skylar frowned.
Natalie wasn’t someone who could hide her feelings. It was clear that something happened. Otherwise, she wouldn’t shut herself in and drink.
She changed her shoes and followed Natalie inside, noticing several empty beer bottles near the couch.
Seeing that Natalie could drink so much on her own, it was obvious that she was dealing with something serious.
After sitting down, Skylar immediately grabbed the beer out of Natalie’s hand.
“Come on, tell me what’s going on.”
Seeing the beer taken away, Natalie picked up some fried chicken from the coffee table, nibbling on it as she spoke, “It’s nothing, really.”
“Nothing?”
Natalie realized she couldn’t hide the truth from Skylar, so she put down the drumstick and said, “Okay, something did happen.”
Skylar nodded, waiting for her to continue.
Natalie had called Skylar over precisely to pour out her troubles. What she experienced for the past few days had left her feeling a little lost, as if it was some dramatic plot twist.
“Yesterday, Mr. Powell’s mother came to see me.
Skylar was surprised. “Mr. Powell’s mother?”
Natalie forced a smile. “Yes, I didn’t expect it either. I’m just his assistant, so I didn’t know why she’d reach out to me privately.
“When we met, I realized she disapproved of me being his assistant. She said that my background and status as a divorcee would drag him down. Basically, she implied that I would try to seduce him.”
“And then?” Skylar frowned.
She had suspected that Austin liked Natalie, but Natalie had just ended her marriage with Jeremy. So, even if she had some feelings for Austin, they were still in the early stages, with no clear romantic intentions.
Under these circumstances, it was surprising that Austin’s mother would approach Natalie.
“Then I told her that I only admired Mr. Powell and never intended for any other relationship. I said I wasn’t interested in marrying into a wealthy family. I just got out of one, so why would I throw myself back into another mess?
“But she didn’t believe me. She said my presence was already affecting Mr. Powell and that he would soon leave Jipsburg, and I shouldn’t be a burden to him. Then, she handed me a blank check.
“I never imagined that a scene straight out of a movie or novel would happen to me–a blank check, with his mother saying I could fill in any amount.” NôvelDrama.Org owns this.
Natalie couldn’t help but show a look of surprise as she recalled that moment.
Seeing Natalie’s expression, Skylar understood that she wasn’t heartbroken. It seemed more like Natalie didn’t want to lose her job. After all, this was her first job since graduating from university.
Sure enough, Natalie continued, “I won’t be able to keep this job. I can’t make things difficult for Mr. Powell. He’s helped me a lot already. It’s time for me to think about what I should do next. It’s just hard for me to leave.
“The colleagues around Mr. Powell are all great, especially Hank. He’s like a big brother, and I’ll really miss his barbecue–no barbecue place can match his flavor.”
Skylar was a little speechless. “So, you’re just reluctant to give up the food?”
“It’s not just that. I’ll miss Mr. Powell too. I won’t be able to watch him act in person anymore. Seeing him perform live is so much more powerful than watching him in a theater. But I’ll keep supporting his movies in the cinema,” Natalie said, sounding a little sentimental.
Still, there seemed to be something else, some vague feeling that she couldn’t quite pinpoint. It wasn’t just these two reasons.
Perhaps…
She just loved the job too much, which made leaving it that much harder.
