Vera glared at Skylar, her frustration palpable. “You!”
“Did you not understand what Skye just said? She made it clear, didn’t she? If you want to know if Joe likes Lizzie, you’re asking the wrong person. Skye isn’t Joe. How could she possibly know?
“Even if Joe does like Lizzie, what does that have to do with you?” Natalie couldn’t stand Vera’s pretentiousness any longer.
Previous articles had praised Vera in various ways, making ordinary girls appear inadequate or utterly worthless in her presence.
But now it was clear that Vera was just putting on an act of superiority. She looked at Vera’s high–and- mightly demeanor and cou
ldn’t help but feel disdain. It was as if she expected Skylar to answer her every question like Skylar had to revolve around her.
Vera was beautiful, but that didn’t mean anything. Skylar was just as beautiful, if not more so.
Vera’s expression remained stoic as she addressed Natalie, “I know you’re Jeremy’s ex–wife, so I’ve let your outbursts slide. But if you keep this up, I’ll mention it to Jeremy.”
Natalie rolled her eyes. “Go ahead and tell him. Who cares?”
Vera’s expression darkened. It was obvious that like attracted like, and Skylar and Natalie were clearly cut
from the same cloth.
No wonder Jeremy divorced Natalie.
“Just remember, don’t be too self–righteous. Mind your own business. Nath, let’s go look around,” Skylar said as she stood up, not wanting to waste more time on Vera.
Natalie quickly stood up as well. She had no desire to engage in meaningless chatter with Vera. Previously, she hadn’t thought much of Vera when others mentioned her.
However, seeing Vera at the hospital in Fachington with Joe had made her feel nauseated by Vera’s pretentious demeanor. She was far too full of herself.
Natalie and Skylar walked away without a second thought. Vera tried to stop them, but the mall was crowded, and several people were already gazing her way. Contentt bel0ngs to N0ve/lDrâ/ma.O(r)g!
She knew that wearing sunglasses and a mask in a public place like this would attract attention. But she didn’t want anyone snapping a picture of her face.
As Skylar and Natalie disappeared from view, Vera felt an uncomfortable pang.
“Is she a celebrity?”
“Probably. Who else would be wearing sunglasses and a mask, all covered up in a mall?”
Hearing the murmurs from people nearby, Vera grew anxious about drawing more attention. The thought of a reporter showing up or someone taking a photo of her face made her nervous, so she quickly left the mall.
Meanwhile, Skylar and Natalie went upstairs, sticking to their plan to browse the women’s clothing and shoes.
“I used to hear that Vera was this cultured, refined sociálite from Jipsburg, known for her class and pride. People even said she was Joe’s true love, that she didn’t care about his relationship with anyone else and could fly abroad whenever she wanted.
“But now that I’ve seen her for myself, it’s complete nonsense,” Natalie said, shaking her head at the memory of Vera’s arrogant behavior earlier.
Compared to Natalie, Skylar had already dealt with Vera a few times and was unfazed. Vera’s behavior didn’t affect her mood. She simply smiled and said, “There’s no need to get upset.”
“If Vera wants to know if Joe likes Lizzie, she should ask him directly. Why come to you with all this indirect nonsense? I don’t get what’s going on in her head,” Natalie grumbled.
Skylar laughed lightly. “Maybe she just wants to see if I’d feel hurt.”
Natalie rolled her eyes, clearly done with talking about Vera. Her attention shifted entirely to a beautiful dress hanging nearby.
“I’m going to try on this dress. It’s gorgeous,” Natalie exclaimed,
Skylar followed Natalie’s gaze and saw a gorgeous new dress with an intricate design that had recently become trendy.
The store was known for its unique vintage–inspired style, and Skylar couldn’t help but take an interest herself.
