Chapter 1242
"Speaking of which," Jenna said, pulling a compact mirror from her purse and touching up her makeup. "You have no idea how annoying those guys were today. But, luckily, I was tough. Otherwise, they might've actually gotten to me." "What happened, exactly?" Sophie asked, noticing Jenna hadn't gotten to the point.
Jenna turned serious, patting Adler on the shoulder. "Show Sophie what we found."
"Oh!" Adler placed a family crest in front of Sophie. "Look at this! Familiar, right?"
Sophie's brows furrowed as she saw the crest. Familiar? It was unmistakably the Mintons' crest!
Adler continued, "On our way back from a date, we got ambushed by some people wearing this crest. Clearly, they were Mintons. This thing even has their anti-forgery mark on it. No mistake."
"Colby, what about you?" Sophie turned to Colby. Since those people had gone after Adler and Jenna, they surely would've targeted Colby too.Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.
Under Sophie's gaze, Colby pulled out two crests from his pocket.
"Wow, the Mintons' new CEO sure is something. His first order of business wasn't anything but to come after us!" Adler scoffed. "If he wants a fight, he'll get one. But to send such lowlifes, not only did they fail to take us down, they made us smell like fish!" Adler's face was full of disdain.
"I think he's declaring war on us!" Jenna added. "Too bad their skills aren't up to par. Over ten people couldn't even take us down."
Sophie, holding the Mintons' crest, grabbed Colby by the arm. "Let's go upstairs."
Colby obediently followed Sophie upstairs.
Once they were on the second floor, making sure Timothy hadn't noticed them, Sophie asked, "Is Odie awake yet?"
"You want to ask him?" Colby replied.
Sophie nodded. The Mintons had parachuted in a new CEO; Odie must know something about it.
"If you want to ask, I'll wake him."
"Okay."
Seeing Sophie's worried look, Colby reached out, smoothing her furrowed brow. "The enemy isn't as scary as you think. I don't want you living in fear every day."
"They've already started coming after us. Who knows when the next ambush will be?" Sophie said. "Think about it. This time, he sent over ten people and failed. Next time, he might send thirty or more. You and Jenna might handle ten each, but you can't fight off a hundred. If something happened to you..."
"They're not that weak," Colby
reassured. "But I promise you, I'let
always protect myself, those around me, and especially you. I won't let anyone hurt us."
"Colby, I'm really scared."
She had seen too many kidnappings, too many assassinations-things far removed from normal life, yet they were happening right in front of her.
And she, like Lennon, Vanessa, and Leticia before her, didn't know when her time might come.
Having once lost her life, she cherished her current existence more than anyone else.
