Yates couldn't help but be charmed, even though he was usually as straight-laced as they come. Fanny watched his cheeks flush and couldn't help but giggle.Ccontent © exclusive by Nô/vel(D)ra/ma.Org.
She took Yates to Judie's mom's hospital room. After reviewing the scans and medical history, Yates said, "Given the overall condition of the patient, I wouldn't recommend another surgery. It's not just her heart that's an issue now; there's also a risk of a stroke."
Fanny, being a doctor herself, knew that a physician wouldn't dash hopes without reason. If Yates said so, it meant further diagnosis was futile. She nodded, "I'll talk to Felicia about it. Whether they want to cling to that slim hope is up to her family. So, if they really insist on the surgery, can you help?"
Yates looked torn. He was genuinely busy. Fanny understood. She didn't press for an answer, simply saying, "I'll communicate with Felicia first." "Alright, if there's a real need, let me know. I'll have my assistant schedule some time," Yates finally agreed.
Fanny didn't look thrilled, though. Despite Yates having been by her side since his return, she could sense how busy he was. This forced companionship, even if it meant clashing with his mentor, didn't sit well with her. But she was a doctor too, busy in her own right, yet she managed to find time for herself. She couldn't understand why Yates was so overwhelmingly busy.
"Are you really that busy?" she couldn't help but ask softly. Yates was silent for a moment before apologizing.
Seeing his guilt-ridden face, Fanny smiled, "It's not your fault. I understand. Let's go, today you're mine." She looped her arm around his shoulder, the height difference making Yates stoop a little to match her pace.
They joked and laughed as they left Judie's parents' hospital room, only to run into Milly. She was clearly waiting for them. Yates frowned, but Fanny chuckled, “Looks like there's no avoiding it today."
Milly approached, and Yates spoke coldly, "I've already made it clear over the phone." He had plans with Fanny today.
But Milly ignored him, turning to Fanny, "Ms. Willis, you can date, but do you have to do it at the expense of Yates's future?" Her words felt like emotional blackmail.
Fanny wasn't having any of it, "If he's willing to sacrifice for me, why not?" Milly's face turned sour, "Fanny, you're being selfish. Sooner or later, you'll regret this, and so will Yates."
"I don't know about regrets. And what right do you have to judge?" Yates snapped back.
But Milly, having chased them down, wasn't easily defeated, "Because I've seen firsthand how you've worked your way up. I know how many

approval." She paused, then added, "Yates, I don't want you to lose everything over a fleeting romance."

She turned to Fanny, "You wouldn't want that either, right?" If love rivals had ranks, Milly was certainly a champion. With a few sentences she made clear her role in Yates's life, silently telling Fanny she was the more fitting choice for him.
Milly's words did hit hard, but Fanny
didn't back down. She looked at
Yates, "If he's truly great, a minor hiccup won't derail him.” Milly scoffed

“Dr. Willis, that might be the case back home, where people value manners and connections. But in the West, one slip-up can lead to total rejection."
She looked at Yates, “The mentor's friend is a very important contact, someone who has greatly helped him in the past. If you bail today, it'll be a huge loss of face."
