An hour later, as Steven made his way back to the apartment, a sense of unease gnawed at him.

Once he arrived, he immediately dialed Skylar’s number.

“Is there trouble with Joe?” he asked, getting straight to the point.

“Yes, something happened to him earlier, but it’s been resolved now. Don’t worry, Skylar replied.

Steven,”

“Good to hear.” Steven didn’t press further. He could tell from her tone that everything was fine.

Skylar waited for Rowan to return with Joe. Howard had already arrived.

To ease her worries, Howard reassured her. “I have a wide variety of medications. Whether he’s just drunk or has been drugged, you don’t need to worry.”

“I feel very reassured with you here, Dr. Grey,” Skylar said honestly.

Still, an unsettling feeling lingered within her, a weight that wouldn’t lift.

Perhaps the recent events, coupled with Viola’s passing, made her overthink everything.

Rowan had just called to say they were on their way back, so she shouldn’t worry. Howard leaned back on the couch and dozed off for a while.

He frowned when he noticed it was already 11:00 pm and they still hadn’t returned. “They should have arrived by now.”

“Lizzie just texted me that they would be here in about ten minutes.” Skylar poured two glasses of water and handed one to Howard. Property © NôvelDrama.Org.

Howard took a sip and said, “It’s remarkable that Mr. Martin has made it this far. With his own family plotting against him, it’s lucky he has you by his side.”

This wasn’t merely flattery from Howard to win favor with Skylar. He was genuinely aware of how much Joe cared for her.

After marrying Skylar, Joe had undergone significant changes. For one, his long–standing insomnia had vanished since they tied the knot.

It was rare for Joe to be troubled by insomnia anymore. For Skylar, he was even willing to pretend to be engaged to Lizzie.

This was enough to show just how much he cared for Skylar.

Skylar was about to speak when the door swung open. Rowan and Paul helped Joe into the

room, followed closely by Lizzie.

Howard sprang up like a spring and quickly walked over. “You’re finally back.”

Skylar stepped forward to replace Rowan and said, “I’ll take care of him.”

She carefully examined Joe.

Joe’s complexion was a bit pale, but he appeared stable. As if sensing he was home, he opened his eyes.

The moment he opened his eyes, he immediately looked at Skylar. Upon seeing her, he seemed to regain some clarity.

“I’m fine. It was just a food allergy.”

Skylar raised an eyebrow. “A food allergy?”

No one had drugged him.

“There were cashew pieces in the dish. But thankfully, Mr. Martin didn’t eat much,” Paul quickly explained.

“Ah, so it was just the cashews. I brought some medication,” Howard said, visibly relieved. As long as it wasn’t anything serious, food allergy was manageable.

Moreover, Joe’s being awake now indicated that his resistance was stronger than before. If

this had happened in the past, not only would he have passed out, but he would also have broken out in hives.
