Minerva nodded and took a swig of her wine. Material © NôvelDrama.Org.

“Rowan told me that, and even Jenny confessed to me too,” she said.

To be fair, Rowan had some skill to persuade Jenny to admit that he knew what had happened. But that was also why Minerva felt that it was all lies no matter what Rowan said now.

“You’ve only heard my story. About you and Mr. Martin… Should I introduce some men to you?” Minerva quickly shook off her negative emotions and asked Skylar.

She had a few cousins who were quite good. Plus, her grandmother knew both George and Alexander. So, when they heard she knew Skylar, they became very interested and wanted to meet her.

So, if Joe didn’t want Skylar, that was his loss, definitely not Skylar’s.

Skylar had just taken a sip of her drink. But she almost spat it out when she heard Minerva’s words. Then she quickly responded, “No, I’m fine as I am now.”

“It’s okay. Sometimes, men can’t be relied on. In the long run, the only person you can truly depend on is yourself.

“Take me, for example–many people want to become my partner, but what they really care about is my family and the benefits I could bring them if we got married.

“So all that talk about true feelings is just nonsense,” Minerva said, letting her buried thoughts out under the influence of alcohol.

She couldn’t tell anyone else those things, but she felt no burden sharing them with Skylar.

She couldn’t help but think it would’ve been nice if she had met Skylar years ago.

“Sometimes it’s good to be a little selfish. If you give too much, you’ll just end up raising a bunch of opportunists,” Skylar said, thinking of the Williams family.

It had been a long time since she last thought about them. The Williams family and Christopher, the people who had hurt her, had long since vanished from her mind. They had torn each other apart and brought about their own downfall.

The Williams family had actually shown her the darkest side of human nature.

“You sound like you’ve been through a lot,” Minerva suddenly stared at Skylar.

Although her words seemed simple and ordinary, Minerva sensed that they came from someone who had lived through hardships and learned from them.

But Skylar just responded calmly, “Who hasn’t come across a few scumbags?”

“Haha… Yeah, everyone does!” Minerva suddenly felt enlightened.

Whether it was Rowan or Jenny, she could lump them all together as people she couldn’t stand.

An hour later, the two were tipsy but kept drinking. They were interrupted by the sound of the doorbell.

Despite not drinking much, Skylar felt a bit wobbly when she stood up. Her alcohol tolerance had always been low. So, she staggered to the door and saw Joe standing outside through the peephole. The sight sobered her up quickly.

Minerva asked tipsily, “Who is it? Whoever it is, send them away. I don’t want to see anyone.“.

“They’re not here for you. He came to pick me up. Let’s catch up another day. It’s late anyway.

I’m going

home to rest,” Skylar said.

Minerva didn’t think much of it and waved her hand. “Alright, let’s meet another time.”

Skylar saw Minerva walking steadily to the bathroom and felt reassured. So, she opened the door and walked out, falling immediately into Joe’s arms.

“Drunk?” Joe caught her as she collapsed into his embrace, finding it quite pleasant to have her snuggle up to him. However, the next second, the smell of alcohol hit him.

“I had a few sips,” Skylar said, hugging Joe’s waist and leaning her weight against him.

She felt too wobbly to walk and was also feeling so sleepy that she could hardly keep her eyes open.

Seeing how drunk she was, Joe guessed that her supposed few sips were probably a few glasses.

“Let’s go home.”

They got in the car soon.
