My Darling, My Dearest

Chapter 429 The News About Jack

Chapter 429 The News About Jack

Scarlett was worried about Jack's sudden discharge from the hospital. She couldn't think of a reason that would allow her to stay with him. Thinking hard, she tried to find a plausible solution to her dilemma. The more she thought, the more frustrated she became. Just when she was dwelling on these thoughts, she received a call. Looking at her phone, she saw Jack's name on the screen. This was quite unexpected and took her by surprise.

Without giving it a second thought, she changed her clothes and set forth to meet him. Once she was there, she caught sight of Jack standing outside a club. His head was lowered and he was smoking. The cigarette butt in his hand flickered in the dark night.

She couldn't hide her excitement and trotted forward. "Jack, I'm here!" she announced.

Jack threw the cigarette on the ground and pulled her into his arms. In a distasteful tone, he announced, "Let's go home!"

Scarlett looked up at him and was flooded with elation. She asked, "Where? Whose home are you talking about?"

Jack hooked her chin and smiled wickedly. "What do you think?" he asked. A blush of shyness spread across Scarlett's face. She carefully helped Jack into the car, and then drove the car to her house. Deep down, she was glad that her mother wasn't home tonight. Exciting thoughts occupied her mind.

The next morning, Scarlett was awakened by the alarm clock she had set last night. There was nothing but resentment on her face. She couldn't forget the injustice she had experienced.

Last night didn't go as she had imagined. She had thought that Jack had finally accepted her. The way he hugged her deluded her into believing he loved her. However, it was nothing but an act. As

soon as they entered the house, he sat on the sofa and ordered her to bring him a blanket. There was nothing but indifference on his face.

Scarlett opened the wardrobe, took out a sexy nightgown and put it on. Then she seductively walked to him with the blanket, trying to attract his attention. But her efforts went in vain. Jack didn't even glance at her. Pulling the blanket to his body, he closed his eyes. After a while, his breathing became even, indicating he had fallen asleep.

Scarlett couldn't understand why he had given her hopes earlier. Now that she was awake, she was getting ready to ask him these questions. Throwing away her quilt, she walked to the hall where she expected to see him. To her utter surprise, he had left. Before she could call him to ask where he was, something caught her attention. There was bank card and a key on the TV cabinet. In his neat handwriting, there was a note. It read, "Move into this house today."

Below was the address of the house. She recognized the place. It was a newly opened building in Ninwell City.

Scarlett was overjoyed. It didn't matter he was gone. He had given her a wonderful surprise and she was eager to see it. The grievance and anger in her heart had already faded. A feeling of hope budded in her heart.

That night, Rachel didn't sleep well. Something was bothering her. She woke up even before the alarm rang. 'I hope I won't be listless at work today, ' she thought to herself. She was someone who couldn't work without eight hours of sleep. She closed her eyes and forced herself to sleep. Then she woke after the alarm rang. After washing up, she slowly walked down with the help of the handrail.

Usually, she would find the breakfast ready by this time. But the table wasn't set today. On seeing Rachel's arrival, Julie quickly folded something and hid it in the cabinet.

Seeing her act so fidgety, Rachel couldn't help but frown. "Julie, what's the matter? You seem disturbed."

"Nothing," Julie said and feigned a smile. Slapping herself on the forehead, she confessed, "Miss, I'm sorry. I forgot to prepare breakfast this morning. If it isn't too late, shall I start now?" "Oh no, that won't be required,"

Rachel smiled. "I can go to the hospital canteen.

After watching her leave, Julie took out the newspaper from the cupboard and looked at it. It was a photo of Jack with a strange woman. Their position was quite intimate. Although she didn't know what was going on, she knew she shouldn't let Rachel see it.

'What if she gets emotional and her baby is harmed?' Julie thought, shaking her head. Deep down, she prayed this wouldn't reach Rachel's ears. But the chances were quite slim.

When Rachel arrived at the hospital, she saw Celia sitting in her office. It was rare to see here at this hour. "I thought you were busy. Why are you here today?"

Celia was transferred to the neurosurgery department and promoted to the head nurse. Rachel often received WeChat messages from her, complaining that she was too busy with her work.

"Today it isn't that busy. I was able to spare some free time." Celia smiled and fixed her eyes on Rachel.

"That's good." After taking out her meal card, Rachel locked her bag in the locker. Shaking the card in front of Celia, she announced, "I'm going to have breakfast now. Do you think you can join me?" "Of course, I am coming with you."

Celia ran up to her and held her arm. "Rachel, are you in a good mood today?"

"Yes," replied Rachel. 'What a weird question to ask!' she thought in her mind.

Then Celia asked another question. "Did you happen to read something bad today?"

Hearing her question, Rachel frowned and asked, "No, but why do you ask? Is there something I should be knowing?"

Celia shook her hand and denied, "No, of course not. I just asked casually."

Rachel couldn't shake off the eerie feeling that Celia had put into her heart. However, she hadn't eaten well last night. On top of that, she didn't have breakfast. Ouickening her pace, she got ready to take care of her grumbling stomach.

It was the peak time for breakfast in the canteen. Rachel had a long line waiting ahead of her. Standing in the line, she heard two doctors talking to each other. "Have you seen today's newspaper?"

"Not yet. I came here too late and couldn't spare time for anything else." The second doctor turned around and asked curiously, "Why? Am I missing something? Tell me."

"It's about Jack—" Celia, who had been standing quietly beside them, suddenly screamed. Both Rachel and the doctor who was about to speak were startled.

Celia covered her belly and said painfully, "My... my belly hurts. It really hurts."

"Where? Sit down here. I'll check what is wrong." Rachel helped her to sit on the edge of the chair. When she was about to press her belly to check where the pain was coming from, Celia caught her hand.

Looking around, Celia said in a low voice, "Rachel, let's go back to your office. There are so many people in the canteen. I feel a little embarrassed."

"But—" Before Rachel could continue, Celia cut her off.

"I feel so much better. It's not as painful as it was a second ago. However, let's still go back to your office."

Nodding her head, Rachel had no choice but to listen to her.

At first, Celia walked very slowly. Later, she simply straightened up and continued in her normal gait. Rachel caught her arm and asked seriously, "Celia, did you pretend to have a stomachache just now?"

"No."

Celia smiled guiltily. "Back then, it hurt a lot. However, I feel nothing now."

"Since you're fine, I suggest you go back alone. I'll go to the canteen and buy myself breakfast."

With that, Rachel turned around and walked towards the elevator again. But Celia couldn't let that happen. Driven by fear, she ran to her and grasped the meal card from Rachel's hand. "Rachel, go back to your office. I'll buy breakfast for you."

The more Rachel thought about it, the more confused she became. She shook her head and said, "No, thanks, I can go there myself."

Not letting go of the card, Celia grinned and said, "Rachel, your belly is so big. You must be tired after walking. I can help you. You should head back to the office and take some rest."

As soon as she finished speaking, the elevator doors slid open. Celia hurried in and the doors were about to close. But Rachel, frustrated with everything, used her hand and stopped the doors from closing. In a cold voice, she ordered, "Come out."

When she first came here this morning, she suspected something was wrong with Celia. And the more she spent time with her, her suspicion became strong. Now she couldn't let go of the matter. A determination to know what was wrong had clutched her.

By now, she had figured out that this matter had something to do with her. Presently, Celia looked like a deer caught in the headlights. Rachel frowned and said in a serious tone, "If you don't come out now, don't come to me ever again! Besides, I have gathered this has something to do with some news. Just so you know, I can browse it on the Internet by myself!"

As soon as those doctors mentioned some news, Celia had feigned stomachache.

Even though she couldn't tell with certainty, she felt she had heard Jack's name. It was very likely that today's news was about him. This would perhaps explain Celia's odd behavior. Please check at N/ôvel(D)rama.Org.

All of a sudden, Celia lowered her head and didn't dare to look at her. She raised her head again with a look of frustration on her face. "Rachel, is it so obvious?"

"Well, it can't be more obvious."

Seeing her coming out of the elevator, Rachel caught her hand and walked towards her office. She asked in a low voice, "Have you taken away the newspaper from my office?"

Every morning, a newspaper would be sent to her office. Sometimes it would be thrown on the floor, other times it would be laid on her desk. Either way, it was always here.

However, today it wasn't around. At first, she had assumed they must have forgotten to send it. But realizing Celia's oddness had something to do with news, she understood this was her doing. She looked firmly into Celia's eyes. Sure enough, she put her hand inside her purse and took out a newspaper. "Rachel, it's very likely that this news is nonsense. You know that these paparazzi tend to make up crazy stuff."

Rachel opened the newspaper and continued to read, paying no heed to Celia's warning. It was indeed related to Jack.

When she first saw him with this model, she was in pain. But with time, she had learnt to accept the truth. Rachel smiled calmly, put the newspaper on the table and said in a flat voice, "This is his business. He can be with whoever he wants. I shouldn't bother myself."

"But how is this possible, Rachel?" Celia asked, clenching her fists. Her voice was brimming with resentment. "He is the father of your baby. Is it morally right for him to hook up with another woman?"

Having had no breakfast, Rachel felt fatigue overtake her. She walked towards a chair and sat down. She looked up at Celia and asked in a low voice, "Then, what do you recommend? Should I confront that woman and perhaps fight with her? Should I slap her for stealing my child's father?"

"No, that's not what I meant,"

Celia replied immediately. The truth was, she herself didn't know what she meant. Author's note
