Kaylee grips my arm, her hold firm as if to tell me to keep quiet without having to say it out loud. I nod, silently telling her that I understand and look around frantically for a weapon or something to use against the bastard that loomed at the entrance of the cave.
I could spot nothing in this kind of darkness and could only spot rocks and dirt.
The man’s shadow looms like a damn bully as he steps forward into the cave and my heart pounds into my chest.
He whistles low, the air whipping inside the cave tauntingly. Shivers of fear race on my skin, revealing themselves as goosebumps on my flesh.
“Come out, come out wherever you are,” he taunts, his hand going behind him and pulling out an arrow from behind him.
His childish taunting got on my nerves and I fisted my hands. We couldn’t stay here forever, he’d find us sooner than later. Eventually, he will spot us if he keeps walking further into the cave.
“We have to do something,” I whisper under my breath low so only Kaylee could hear. “He will find us eventually.”
Kaylee nods, releasing my arm and shifting to crouch in a way that told me she was ready to pounce when it will be necessary.
His shadows dance across the cave’s walls and I nervously reach out for a small rock. It wasn’t much but if I could aim it properly I could cause some damage. The hunter steps forward and stops, aiming the bow and arrow at us.
My grip on the rock turns brutal, my palms slick with sweat as fear licked across my spine. Had he spotted us? There was a possibility his eyes had adjusted to the darkness and made it easier to see us where we were crouched.
We couldn’t afford to make him get any closer….
But this far out I didn’t have faith that I would be able to aim properly. I sink my teeth into my bottom lip, my hands shaky. He takes another step forward and though the man is smaller than the cave, he somehow feels like a giant in here.
My heart hammers against my chest. If he comes just a little more closer I could take the risk of hurling the stone. He whistles again, taunting the air knowing he was setting fear.
Kaylee is stiff, ready to pounce as her eyes remain on him unwaveringly. And then he takes another step, and another and I aim. The rock goes flying to him straight and the sickening thud of it hitting him right across his forehead was relieving.
Striking him made me feel proud and I couldn’t help but smirk.
He grunts in pain, lifting his hand to his head which was enough of a distraction for Kaylee to force herself to shift and lunge for him. With a loud feral growl Kaylee’s beast jaws snap around the hunter’s ankle.
“Mother fucker!”
He yells, falling to the ground hard. He tries to stab her with the arrow, fighting to wrestle out of her hold but she won’t let him go. I look around for another rock, needing to help her. Kaylee sees his attack before he can complete it and harshly bites off his arm.
He roars in pain and she silences him with a brutal bite to his neck, clamping so hard I can hear the gurgle of his blood in his throat and mouth. But just as we thought it was the last of it, another figure appears at the entrance of the cave, bow, and arrow aiming directly at Kaylee.
Kaylee!” I utter loudly in panic as the second hunter aims for her head. The first hunter must have been a sacrifice to get us occupied so the other could strike.
My heart races when the arrow whips in the air, directly toward Kaylee who jerks back a little, however it manages to embed itself in her other leg.
She snarls, backing away to hide herself in the darkness as he aims to hit her with another arrow again. However, before he can a huge beast lunges for him and bites off his head clean off his shoulders. The headless man
now falls to his knees and collapses onto the ground.
My heart leaps and I rise to my feet as I breathe out in relief.
Xade!”
