Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire

Chapter 105

Selena felt her heart skip a beat. You had to admit, the man had a certain allure.

When sober, his eyes were always cold and distant, carrying an air of superiority that never softened, not even in their most intimate moments.

But once he had a few too many drinks, his gaze would become tender and deep, glistening with emotion, like a big puppy wagging its tail at you, irresistibly pulling you in.Text © by N0ve/lDrama.Org.

It was like one of those addictive novels - you'd give your all for it.

Three years into their marriage, she had fallen for this countless times, constantly convincing herself that maybe Everett just wasn't capable of love. No, he was simply naturally aloof.

She thought if she just tried a little harder and put in a bit more effort, surely she'd find her way into his heart.

With that thought, her fleeting fantasies disappeared, and Selena let out a cold chuckle. "Don't push your luck."

Not getting the response he wanted, Everett frowned, glanced at her, and took the glass of milk from her hand, drinking it down without protest.

He had never been a fan of the taste of milk, finding it too strong. However, every time Selena insisted he drank it to avoid a hangover, he'd go along with it.

She had a knack for coaxing him, like he was a kid.

At first, he thought it was silly and naive. But she was so stubborn, no matter how many times he refused.

Then... there was that one time when she got so upset her eyes turned red, and at that moment, he found her heartbreakingly endearing.

Since their marriage, apart from those sensual moments in bed that brought tears to her eyes, she had never shown such vulnerability in front of him.

That had softened his heart, and he gave in, drinking the milk he didn't care for. Now, it had become a habit.

She always got the milk to just the right temperature, perfect for drinking, and Everett finished it in one go, his fingers tapping lightly on the glass. In a husky voice, he asked, "Selena, are you happy today?"

The question caught her off guard, and she responded with a cool, "I'm okay."

Clearly, this wasn't the answer Everett was hoping for. His brows furrowed again, and he shifted a little closer to her, almost unconsciously.

His voice was deeper, "Why are you so hard to please these days?"

Back then, just a look, a smile, a phone call, or at the very least, buying her all sorts of jewelry, beautiful clothes, and shoes would make her as happy as a clam.

Lately, he had been bending over backward to make her happy, yet she remained as unyielding as ever.

Hearing this, Selena looked at him as if she'd seen a ghost and shot back, "You're trying to please me?"

"What do you think? You reckon I've got nothing better to do than ditch all my work, come to this middle-of-nowhere place to play house with you, making a fool of myself?" His eyes on her were like he was dealing with an idiot.

Selena was at a loss for words. But

then again, she couldn't deny it. Everett hated pointless socializing more than anything, let alone hanging out with her relatives, taking photos, and putting on a smile. Not to mention, just this morning, he had paid respect to her parents and sweetly charmed her grandmother.

All of this was something he would never have done in the past.

Everett had done most of the drinking tonight, and Selena hadn't had much, so she was pretty clear-headed. Yet right now, she felt a little tightheaded. The emotions welling up inside her were starting to overpower her reason.

Her lips parted slightly, and in the stillness of the night, she asked, "Why are you trying to make me happy?"
