Getting Suspicious And A Plan
Marissa looked up and saw Jaime standing in front of them with a sly smile on his face.
“Jaime, what are you doing here?” she asked him.
He took a deep breath and then sat down beside Jessie.
“Well, Jessie happens to work in the same organization as I and so I see her a lot, but I guess she didn’t tell her boyfriend or should I say ex boyfriend since he’s married now…” he said and faced Jessie who was angry and looked really pissed at Marissa. Marissa nodded as she put the pieces of the puzzle together.
“So you guys are colleagues… no wonder he knew about your relationship with Alexander.”
“But I’ll still say what I want to say to you Jessie. Don’t trust any words that come out of his mouth and just trust your man.
I have to go. See you later, Jessie.” Marissa said and stood up and walked out of the coffee shop and hailed a cab.
While inside the cab she thought deeply about how close was Jessie and Jaime for him to discuss such personal matters with her. What was their relationship?
She told the cab to take her to Alexander’s apartment address. She needed to see him and inform him of what was going on.
When Marissa arrived at Alexander’s apartment, she knocked on the door. A few moments later, Alexander answered the door. His expression changed from surprise to confusion when he saw Marissa standing there.
“Marissa, what are you doing here?” he asked.
“I need to talk to you, Alexander. Can I come in?” Marissa asked.
Alexander hesitated for a moment, but then stepped aside to let her in.
“Of course, come in,” he said, his voice tight.
Marissa could tell that he was already on edge, and she didn’t want to make things worse. But she knew that she had to tell him what she had learned.
“Alexander, I just had a very strange conversation with Jessie,” she said, choosing her words carefully. “She told me that she’s working on a big project with a man named Jaime. And that Jaime is the one who told her about our contract marriage.”
Alexander’s expression turned to one of shock. “What? How could he possibly know about that?” he asked, his voice rising in panic.
“I don’t know how he knows, but I’m worried about what else he might know. And I’m worried about what else he might tell Jessie.”
Alexander paced back and forth in the small living room, clearly agitated. “I can’t believe this is happening. How could he possibly know? Was he following and investigating us this whole time?”
“I honestly don’t know, but I think there’s something we don’t know about. I think Jessie and Jaime are somehow involved in something I don’t know.” Marissa informed Alexander.
Alexander paused his pacing and looked at Marissa with a horrified expression. “What do you mean? What could they possibly be involved in?”
Marissa bit her lip. “I’m not sure. But I think we need to figure it out. I think there’s something going on.”
Alexander’s face was pale as he considered Marissa’s words. “You’re right. We need to get to the bottom of this. But I don’t know where to start.”
“I think I know.” Marissa said.
“There must be a reason why he has spoken to you about what he’s found. He might be trying to use Jessie against you so that you let go of the contract and hand it over to him.”
Alexander looked at Marissa with a confused look on his face.
“Because he knows that Jessie is your weakness. He knows how much you love Jessie and would do anything for her. So he’s using Jessie as bait to get you to give up on the contract, but I don’t think you should.
Don’t make him win, Alexander. Don’t give him the satisfaction.” Marissa said.
Alexander placed his hand on his hair frustrated by everything.
“So what should I do? How should I not let him win when he already knows everything?”
Marissa didn’t say anything and just pondered about what Alexander just asked, thinking about what she could say that could fix everything.
“Uhmmm… how about we continue and attend the dinner as planned?”
Alexander looked at her confused.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean… we could go and pretend like we don’t know that he knows.” she explained.
“And how would that work? He knows we must have known that we know about the contract marriage between us. So how should we go to the dinner and act like we don’t know?” he asked Marissa.
Marissa hesitated for a moment, trying to figure out what to say. “I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out. We go to dinner and we act like everything is normal. We try to learn as much as we can about what he knows and what he’s up to. We can play along until we figure out a way to get him to tell us the truth. Then we can decide what to do next.”
Alexander looked skeptical. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea. What if he gets suspicious and starts asking questions? Or worse, reveal everything at the dinner? What are we gonna do then?”
Marissa thought for a moment. “I know it’s risky, but I think it’s our best chance to get the information we need.
We can be cautious and make sure we don’t give him any reason to suspect that we’re not being honest.
And if he does try to reveal anything at the dinner, we can play dumb and act like we don’t understand what he’s talking about.”
Alexander was still uncertain. “I’m not sure I’m comfortable with that plan. What If he has proof that our marriage is fake and reveals it there? Do you know what it would do to me and my company?
Not to talk of the contract I signed with those investors. They would sue me for damages and breach of contract because I lied that I was married when I lied and faked everything to get what I wanted.
I don’t think that’s a good idea, Marissa.” he said.
Marissa walked up to him. “Then what should we do? You know how manipulative and cunning Jaime is?”
Alexander paused for a while thinking about what to do about the whole situation while Marissa waited for him to make a decision.
Just then, Alexander snapped his finger.
“Have got an idea and I don’t think they would expect it.”
Marissa looked at him confused.
“And what’s the idea?” she asked him.
“Come closer, let me whisper it into your ear.” he said, as Marissa moved closer and leaned her ear closer to hear what idea he had.
Alexander leaned closer to her ear and whispered some words into her ear. Marissa opened her eyes wide in surprise and yelled.
“You want us to do what?!”
Alexander laughed. “Yeah, I know it’s crazy, but it just might work. You know they won’t see it coming, and it will get us out of this situation.”
Marissa looked at him and shook her head. “I don’t know if I can do that. It’s risky and could backfire. And besides, what if I don’t want to do that?”
Alexander looked at her with a serious expression. “I know it’s not an ideal solution, but I really think it”s our best option. If you don’t want to do it, I won’t force you. But we need to find another way to get out of this. Do you have any ideas?”
Marissa thought for a moment. “I might have an idea, but I’m not sure if you’ll like it. It’s going to be risky, but I think it’s worth trying. Are you ready to hear it?”
Alexander nodded. “I’m ready. What is it?”
