Madelyn stood nearby. She watched Melinda’s profound anguish. She felt her legs grow heavy as if filled

with lead.

The wait was excruciating. Unexpectedly, Madelyn quietly accompanied Melinda for an hour.

When the doors to the emergency room finally opened, a nurse emerged.

She called out, “Family of Serena Hancock.”

“That’s me.”

Melinda rushed forward anxiously.

The nurse handed her a document and said, “This is a critically ill notice. Please sign here.”

Melinda completely lost control of her emotions at the mention of the critically ill notice.

Madelyn’s heart tightened.

She stiffly approached Melinda and said to the nurse, “Do everything you can to save her!”

The nurse was taken aback by the sight of Madelyn.

Most of the hospital staff knew Madelyn as Andrew’s wife from when she last saved Melinda and Serena.

The nurse respectfully said to Madelyn, “Mrs. Miller, we will do our best, but this is the procedure.”

Madelyn nodded and took the form. As she held the piece of paper in her hands, she inexplicably felt the weight of its significance.

“Melinda.”

Madelyn handed the form to Melinda.

“Did you hear what the nurse said? This is just procedural. Don’t delay it.”

Sometimes, death cannot be saved just by refusing to sign a document. The words were too harsh for Madelyn to utter.

Melinda was filled with despair as she faced Madelyn. Nevertheless, she still signed her name on the critically ill notice.

The nurse took the form inside the emergency room.

Madelyn guided Melinda to sit. The latter had been crying continuously, and Madelyn felt sorry for her.

Perhaps it was because her hopes of being a mother seemed bleak, but Madelyn couldn’t bear to see any harm come to Melinda’s beloved child.

“Don’t worry. Rena will be fine,” Madelyn finally said.

She comforted Melinda after a long silence.

But her words offered no solace to Melinda. At that moment, Melinda’s mind was filled with memories of -raising Serena.

She sobbed, “The first time I saw Rena was in the snow. There had been a severe car accident that day.

Melinda couldn’t continue after that.

Her mind was flooded with memories of Serena’s numerous health crises over the years. Madelyn felt a sharp, intricate pain in her heart while listening to Melinda’s brief words.

She placed her cold hand over Melinda’s.

She said, “You’ve done your best.”

“I want her to grow up healthy. I truly do. But I feel like she could leave me at any moment.”

Melinda’s voice trembled.

Melinda had lost count of the times she had accompanied Serena to various hospitals. Madelyn felt a terrifying emptiness when she heard that Serena might leave this world.

Madelyn mumbled, “It won’t happen. Don’t think like that.”

“Ms. Gracia, I’m deeply grateful to you. You have given me some relief and allowed me to focus on caring

for her.

“Before you, I had to work several jobs a day, but it barely made a difference in Rena’s condition. Once Rena’s health stabilizes, I promise to find a way to repay you.”

“Don’t worry about that now. Rena’s health is what matters most,” Madelyn reassured her.
