Part 87 # The Safe House
Amongst the silhouette of dawn already revealing its light, Lara sat in the police car with tension creeping into her heart. Her eyes continued to stare blankly out the window. Lara felt the silence enveloping them, but within that silence, she felt the weight heavily burdening her chest.
“Sigh….” Every time Lara closed her eyes, the image of her child’s face appeared in her mind. She tried to calm herself, but the pain and loss ran so deep it made it hard for her to breathe.
“Ra….” Andre called softly when he saw Lara shedding tears. She immediately wiped her wet face and leaned her head on Andre’s shoulder. He knew, it still needed a process to know the fate of their child for sure. Seno could have been lying, right?
“I’m always here to help. Stay calm,” Andre whispered softly while gently caressing his lover’s head. Lara nodded weakly, although Andre said comforting things to her, she still felt like she was in darkness alone.
Andre sighed deeply. No matter how hard he tried to find the right words as consolation, as much as Lara tried to draw boundaries to keep sane, Andre knew, there were no words that could erase the pain felt by the woman he loved.
The police car continued to drive on the quiet road, heading towards the safe place promised by the officers. However, even though they were heading to a secret location, Lara felt like she was in an uncontrollable emotional storm.
Every time she thought about what had happened to her child, anger and despair surged within her. Lara felt like she had failed as a mother, that she couldn’t protect her child from the threatening dangers.
“When can we meet my child, Ndre? I don’t even feel pain. I don’t need treatment, I want to meet my child, Ndre,” Lara shook Andre’s shoulders again. The doctor looked at Lara with gentle eyes and whispered softly, “Be patient, Ra. We will definitely meet him.”
Meanwhile, in another prisoner transport vehicle, Seno sat with still-raging anger. He continued to struggle, but the blow of the gun handle caused Seno to fall silent, no longer speaking.
“Damn it!” He cursed his fate inwardly. Seno felt betrayed by his own efforts. The drug that had won the hearts of the public might now become a failed product to be confiscated by the government.
“ARGH!” Seno felt crushed. He didn’t expect this problem to take a wrong turn. ‘That bitch really jinxed me!’ Seno continued to mutter to himself. He felt desperate, but at least… Seno still had enough money to hire the best lawyer in Jakarta.
“This is not over yet. No. It will never end.”
His sly smile adorned his torn-red lips due to the blow of the gun handle. Seno didn’t feel too much pain, he was just angry. He didn’t want to lose all his money and also the chance to dominate the healthcare business in this country. It will never happen.
The police car continued to drive through the chilly dawn that had just begun to break its light. The morning breeze was so fresh, coupled with the empty road, adding to the sense of calmness.
The sound of sirens enveloped them, the roar of engines also bore witness to how Lara’s and the criminals’ fate in the car behind them intertwined.
The car carrying Lara and the one carrying Seno dispersed at the intersection not far from the main headquarters. Lara would undergo treatment in the safe house, while Seno would be confined in the detention cell.
“Get out!” The officers dragged Seno and his henchmen out of the prisoner transport vehicle. They were then separated and placed in separate cells.
“Hey! You have no right to detain me like this!” Seno shouted again.
“Calm down, Buddy! Your lawyer will be here soon.” A uniformed officer who had been typing reports since earlier responded to Seno’s screams. Unlike the officers who arrested him earlier, he didn’t want to answer anything.
The sound of metal clashing with Seno’s tantrum was a sign that the new prisoner was like a spoiled child. Some other inmates in the cell felt disturbed. One of them spat on Seno, right on the head.
“Y-you bastard.” Seno only muttered because the person who spat on him was a tall man with many tattoos covering his arms and neck. The head shaking from several other men seemed to signal Seno not to cause any more trouble.
“D-damn it.”
While swallowing his spit, Seno finally sat slumped in the corner of the room, waiting for the promised lawyer to arrive. Previously, he had indeed handed over his attorney’s business card, and hopefully, the man would come soon.
“I will definitely cut his salary!”
At the safe house, Lara was greeted by an officer with a warm smile.
“Welcome, Mrs. Lara. I’m Officer Ani, one of the police officers at this safe house. It’s nice to meet you,” a police officer greeted while extending her hand towards Lara.
“Ah, yes, Officer Ani, please help me. I’m Lara,” Lara replied while shaking Officer Ani’s hand warmly.
“I’m Andre, a doctor.”
“Welcome, Dr. Andre. It’s fortunate to have a doctor here. Our resources become more efficient,” Officer Ani joked while showing the living room so her guest could relax for a moment.
“In this house, you will receive treatment, assessment, and also protection. We are ready to provide the support you need while you are here. If there is anything I can help with, please don’t hesitate to contact me.”
“Thank you very much.”
The officer then showed Lara the entire room that would be her temporary living space.
Lara stepped in with a little hesitation, but she tried to be brave. Her heart was still filled with anxiety and deep pain. But here, Lara was sure she would get adequate security. She was still traumatized by the abduction and captivity carried out by her ex-husband.Property © NôvelDrama.Org.
“The house is comfortable,” Andre joked while patting Lara’s shoulder gently. The woman nodded and agreed with her lover’s words. The atmosphere there seemed calm and comfortable. Lara then sat on the soft sofa to relax. The burden on her heart slowly disappeared, replaced by hope that would soon come.
“We will always keep you informed about this case, Ma’am. Don’t worry. There are several guards taking turns watching this house. You can rest peacefully and safely.”
“Thank you very much. Officer Ani. I am truly grateful.”
“No problem. This is our duty. The appointed doctor will arrive in about 30 minutes. Please wait. You will receive the necessary treatment and assessment.”
“Okay, Officer. Thank you very much.”
“You’re welcome. I’ll take my leave now. Have a good rest.”
The officer then left, and another police officer stood guard at the front post. Shortly, the doctor who would treat Lara would arrive. And, she didn’t know that the doctor actually came from Andromeda Hospital.
