The path ahead grew darker and darker, the muddiness akin to stepping into a lake. Lysander could feel. countless tiny cuts on her face. Yet, she persisted, glancing back one last time.
The direction in which Josiah had fled was completely opposite to theirs. Under the cover of nightfall, she could only make out a few faint figures.
Though the thugs had visited the village numerous times, they were known only for their show of force and causing chaos, and no villager would ever show them the way. Hence, after losing track of Lysander and Rhizone, they chose to surround Josiah.
Lysander only had time to see his tall silhouette from the corner of her eye before the scene before her was entirely consumed by foliage.
After an indeterminate amount of time passed, a glimmer of light finally appeared up ahead.
The lake was located at the end of the village, while the health center was situated in the middle. A solitary bulb hung at the entrance, casting a dim yellow glow on the path.
Lysander had been living in the health center for so long, but it was the first time she found the tiny light bulb to be so bright that it stung her eyes.
In the dead of night, all was eerily quiet. The only sounds that could be heard were the sound of the two of them panting.
Rhizone quickly recovered and continued on his way. Lysander wanted to keep up, but the breath she had been holding escaped abruptly at the sight of the health center, to the point where her calves began to tremble uncontrollably.
It wasn’t due to fear, but rather an extreme physical exhaustion. Her body simply couldn’t hold up any longer.
Rhizone noticed something off about Lysander and shot her a look of concern. “Dr. Thorne, are you injured? There’s blood on your hands.”
Lysander looked down and only then noticed her hands were covered in countless tiny cuts from the wild grass on the path. The wounds weren’t deep, but they looked quite frightening due to their haphazard pattern. In contrast, the bloodstains on her cheek, hidden by her hair, were less noticeable.
“I’m okay. Let’s hurry back and call the police.” She attempted to head toward the health center as if nothing was amiss, but after barely moving a few steps, she began to stumble. She didn’t want to appear weak in front of the child.
Rhizone had led her down a narrow path and soon, they were confronted with a trench that was over a person’s height in depth.
Lysander made a quick estimate. The trench was probably over two meters wide. With her abilities, there was simply no way she could jump across it.
“Dr. Thorne, Rhizone said, “let me help you.”
Rhizone noticed her reluctance, but without uttering another word, he lifted her up just like he did when they encountered the centipede before. Gathering his strength, he prepared to move. In an instant, Timandar undaverned his intantions ind ennnaestinal, penuchad doum

Feeling Rhizone’s sudden burst of strength, she immediately followed his lead and jumped. Leveraging the momentum Rhizone had given her by throwing her forward, she narrowly made it to the other side of
the trench.
Rhizone then took a couple of steps back to gain momentum and easily jumped over. Afterward, he quickly and agilely led the way to the health center.
Lysander felt particularly embarrassed. As an adult, she should have been the one protecting the child. However, she found herself unexpectedly relying on a child’s assistance to get away.
“Sorry, Rhizone, for dragging you into this.”
Rhizone was greatly inspired by Josiah’s instructions. “Josiah entrusted your safety to me, so I absolutely cannot let him down!”
By the time they returned to the health center, it was already midnight.
At that time, the nurses were all asleep in the dormitory at the back, while the small building in front was shrouded in darkness, not a single soul to be seen.
Lysander directed Rhizone to the consultation room, then she retrieved the charging cable that had been left in the wooden desk drawer earlier. She used it to charge the phone that Josiah had handed to her when they parted.
In the darkness of the consultation room, the light from the phone screen was nothing short of a beacon of hope.
Lysander dialed the emergency number first. “Hello, I need to report a crime…”
She reported the location of the village and the situation she encountered. The other party was very responsible, stating that they would dispatch the police immediately.
But they were in town. It would take them at least an hour or two to get here, and this was already the closest police station to the village.
After witnessing the incident involving a university student from his village being retaliated against, Rhizone had lost faith in the effectiveness of reporting to the police, He stood by, his face etched with worry. He was still in the dark about the whereabouts of his parents and sister.
Lysander gently stroked his hair and reassured him, “Don’t be afraid. Your sister is very smart. She must have taken your parents to a safe place.”
Rhizone nodded earnestly. “Mhm.”
While comforting the child who had helped her escape, Lysander dialed Carol’s number. ConTEent bel0ngs to Nôv(e)lD/rama(.)Org .
Carol received the call while on the way to the village.
The task of delivering the refrigerator didn’t originally involve her. However, she had important matters to report to Josiah, and she wanted to check on Lysander’s current situation herself. Unexpectedly, she received a sudden call from Lysander.
A foreboding sense of unease began to swell within her.
“Mrs. Guerra…”

Before she could even finish her greeting, Lysander on the other end of the line had already rapidly relayed the events of the evening. She was panting, her urgency palpable.
In Carol’s memory, Lysander rarely lost her composure. Even when she had been utterly disappointed in Josiah in the past, she still managed to maintain her dignity.
Something serious must have happened to make Lysander so frantic.
“Mrs. Guerra, please don’t panic. I happen to have a driver and a few men helping with the delivery of the refrigerator with me. We should reach the village in a few hours at most. I’ve been informed about the matters with Dillon and I’m arranging for someone to handle it right now,” Carol responded with a serious
tone.
Lysander was worried that a prolonged phone call would cause a delay, so after explaining the whole situation, she promptly hung up the phone..
Though Rhizone was unaware of who Lysander was on the phone with, he had gleaned a bit of the situation from overhearing the conversation. He asked, “Dr. Thorne, are we about to receive help?”
“Yeah” Lysander maintained her composure, gathering her disheveled hair and neatly tying it back.
“Rhizone, do you know the way around the village entrance? The people coming to help us are first–timers here. They’re not sure how to navigate. Could you possibly go and meet them? It’s a lady in her forties, accompanied by a few men.”
She was unfamiliar with the local roads. Instead of forcing herself to navigate, it was better to leave matters. to Rhizone, who had grown up here.
Rhizone’s greatest fear was being unable to lend a hand. Without hesitation, he said, “I’ll head over right
now!”
No sooner had his words fallen than he turned and dashed out of the health center’s front door.
Lysander gritted her teeth as she removed her socks, now muddied and soiled. She noticed the wounds on her feet, caused by sharp stones, but she didn’t have the time to tend to them. Instead, she limped into her spare shoes and then anxiously glanced at the time.
Before Carol and the police arrived, she was simply left in a state of anxious waiting, with absolutely nothing else she could do.
In a moment of urgency, Rhizone had led Lysander down this shortcut. Even if she were to try retracing their steps, she wasn’t confident she could do it, especially given their opponents outnumbered them.
The people under Dillon’s command wouldn’t be audacions enough to dare harm the CEO of Guerra Group, right!
However, Lysander made a somewhat disheartening discovery: The answer was uncertain.
In Harborbrook, Josiah was a map of great influence, but in these remote areas, he was virtually unknown.
Even if he revealed his identity, it was not guaranteed that those people would believe him.
Remembering the outcome of that university student who had wanted to do something helpful for everyone, Lysander felt a chill traveling down her spine.
