Chapter 18 Case File
It has been a week since she stayed in the cabin. Ian had gone back since day two, but Luka the mob’s IT guy had set up a secure line where both of them could communicate daily, even a couple of times a day.
She had calmed down and trusted everything to Ian. She had hope for the best, while Ian was busy with his high-profile murder case at the office. But he was keeping close contact with Max and Luka. This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - ©.
“Thank you for this…” he was talking to Max on the phone in between his working hours keeping himself updated with Blair’s case.
Luka had hacked into the police main database for Blair’s case and retrieved all of the incriminating evidence against her. Ian should be upset that the guy had easily cracked the police database, but he couldn’t care less. He just wanted everything solved quickly.
He was glad that it was self-defense, but the premeditated murder would definitely put her in a maximum-security prison, along with the other high-profile murder case. And knowing exactly what might’ve happened in that kind of prison, he was trying everything that he could to keep her out.
“This one is on me, I know you look at us as the big bad mob. But we actually protect our own, and she is an abuse victim, definitely needed our protection. We are a tightly-knit family, and wouldn’t want any of our women to be in her position.”
Ian didn’t know how to reply to that, so he just said another thank you and let him explain everything. They have agreed to meet up at the cabin two hours later.
“I’m bringing Becca, she had come to work at my clinic. And she still has her connection and her doctor’s license, I also know the best defense lawyers, they could prepare everything for her. Look I’m trying not to overwhelm her, but her case is looking good, detective. We will talk later.”
Minutes later he hangs up on Max and was back behind his computer and drowns himself with more paperwork, though his thoughts kept on going back to Blair.
After an hour he decided to go back home and pack an overnight bag, so he could leave straight to the office the next day.
“Detective, do you have a moment?”
He cursed on the inside when his captain called him into his office.
“I understand you had closed the double homicide case. Good job detective. Now, while you’re doing the boring report work we have an open murder case. They believed that the suspect had fled the city and was trying to blend into the bigger City area rather than the rural side of town.”
Ian was trying hard to keep himself calm when his captain opened the file in front of him revealing a blonde-haired woman, looking fragile and beautiful just like one of those Stepford wives. Blair.
“So it’s not our case?”
“No, they’re just letting out a bulletin for several potential cities where the suspect might’ve fled to and ask us to be on the lookout.”
“Right.”
“Her name is Olivia Turner, she might go as her maiden name, Olivia Blair Wright. They believed that she had shot her husband in his sleep…” he patted the case file and look straight at him. Ian could feel his heart skip a beat, thinking that his captain could see right through him.
“… and tomorrow I’m getting you paired up with Garcia for her transition in being a detective.”
The captain looked at him again, intensely, for a couple of seconds, knowing Ian had been changing partners several times already. They didn’t seem to click with him, since he always does his own thing and keeps his partner in the dark.
Though it was not his wants that was just how the way he works. He didn’t mean to keep them in the dark, but they were just too slow for him.
His captain knows about it, and since he closes ninety percent of his homicide cases, more than his other detectives in the force. He was letting Ian do what he wants, but his captain would sometimes pair him with new detectives because he has always been such a great mentor to them.
“Right, Turner’s Case, officer Garcia. I got it. I’ll take a look at the case, then head back for the day.”
Ian quickly exited his office eager to know what they have on Blair. He was about to sit down when her voice called him out.
Crap!
“Officer Garcia.”
“Detective Ian Taylor, the captain said you would mentor me…” she smirked at him and he smiled back at her politely, but a curse on the inside realizing the double meaning of the words.
“Yes, he just told me about it. Congratulation on the promotion.”
He was ushering her to his office, thinking that he badly needs to check on Blair’s case file then hid it away deep in his drawers.
“We may need to limit our nightly visits,” she voiced her words.
“I’m seeing someone.” He replied quickly.
“Oh…”
That was all she could reply to him as they reach the captain’s door. He smiled again then open the door for her.
“Sir, officer Garcia is here.”
“Thank you, Detective Taylor, you’re dismissed.”
He decided to skim through her files before Garcia was out of the door. Thinking he’d read the rest tomorrow, he was already late anyway.
He took some pictures from the file but leave the rest, Luka had probably downloaded the file already.
He was on his way out five minutes later, then packed his stuff in a hurry when he arrived at his place, and finally leave for the red cabin not wanting to keep Blair waiting too long for him.
It was well after dinner time when he arrived at the red cabin, the place looked empty and quiet from afar. But he knows that she was in there already with the country’s most dangerous mafia boss.
The possessive feel stirred deep inside his heart.
No can’t be…
His thoughts suddenly emerged when he saw her open the door.
“Hey, you’re late.” She took his hand, while he was still stuck in his last thoughts. But snapped out of it when Max called out to him.
“Taylor! your woman makes a mean meatloaf.”
“You cook?” he asked her, as they walk into the dining area where there was Max, Luka, and one woman having their diner.
“Yeah, well… I don’t have anything to do…”
“Blair, don’t work too much you’re still…”
“Hurt, I know. But Rebecca is here, come I’ll introduce you to her.”
Blair introduced Rebecca the young doctor to Ian, then they had dinner where he was actually surprised by her cooking ability.
“Blair, you can actually cook.”
His heart warms when he saw her smile at his compliment.
The meeting took place for another two hours where Luka gave them the full report and Rebecca showed them Blair’s file.
Ian holds her hand throughout the whole meeting, she was nervous, but everyone else was confident with her case, while Ian burns with rage after hearing and seeing Rebecca’s file on Blair and her explanation on the abuse. The timeline, the bruises, the extent of the wounds, and lastly the intervals between the abuse all were tied up to one conclusion, self-defense caused by domestic abuse.
“I know the right attorney for you. Next, you just need to decide when you want to turn yourself in and surrender.” Max said to Blair, taking his drink and finishing it in one gulp.
“I… I…” she was stuttering when Ian interrupted her.
“We will discuss it, give her a couple of days to decide. But for now, I think she’s overwhelmed with all of your data. Shit, Luka, I should be worried that you retrieved the same file as I did…”
Fuck!
Ian blurted out his words, then cursed when he saw Blair just realize that he got her file, that they were catching up with her. And all she could think was her sick mother, she must’ve seen her on the news by now. Her eyes were teary when she excused herself back to the bedroom.
“Shit… guys, I think…”
“We’ll go and give you some privacy, but Rebecca will need to change her cast, and take an x-ray for her arm, she can use my facility in our clinic. It’ll be safe, but I think she needs to do it soon, preferably before everything goes down.” Max said as he got up getting ready to leave.
“Ok, I’ll keep in touch. Again, I owe you.”
Markov looked at him seriously, then just nodded while Luka and Rebecca were already waiting for him. Then they were gone within moments, leaving both in the secluded cabin.
