Falling for my Ex-Fiancee’s Best friend

Restless

Nathan couldn’t sleep well. All through the night, he kept tossing and turning, wondering where he had gone wrong, and what he had possibly done to deserve this kind of horrible luck.

Silver was a deranged, delusional bitch. This he knew now, but the damage that she had done would cost him more than just a small fraction of his reputation. But that wasn’t the main thing that bothered Nathan. It was the fact that Demelza had been dragged into all of the squabble, and at the time that he was trying to convince her to come back too.

Nathan rolled some more on his bed. He looked at the clock that was on his nightstand and exhaled wearily. In a few hours’ time, it would be dawn. He needed sleep, but sleep refused to come.

A plan was forming in his head. He would have to go straight to Silver’s house in the morning, but right now, he turned off the lights in his room and closed his eyes to the conjured image of Demelza playing in his mind.

The very next morning, Nathan was up, early as dawn. He hadn’t planned everything out yet, but he needed to see Silver anyway. She was acting too recklessly and without regard for anyone and he needed to put an end to that.

He didn’t even bother to eat anything. He was certain that he was not going to be spending a long time at Silver’s place. All he needed to do was tell her off her antics. And then everything would be alright. At least for now.

Nathan gulped down his cup of coffee and got into his car. He drove straight to Silver’s house where Silver was already waiting for him.

She looked beautiful in the morning sunlight, but she was as crazy as a bat as she had demonstrated. He was not going to let anything get in the way of him accomplishing what he had set out to accomplish today.

“Good morning, Nathan,” Silver said in her sweetest voice. It wasn’t even late in the morning and she was already nursing a martini (or at least, it looked like a martini to Nathan). She leered at him. “Have you come to punish me, daddy?”

Nathan gritted his teeth and ground out, “stop talking that way. Get in the car. We’re going out.”

Silver stared at him for a few minutes, then she reluctantly got into the car. Nathan started the car and they were off. Silver tried to touch him once during the ride, but Nathan rebuffed her attempts and she turned to stare outside the window, sulking.

“Where are we even going?” She asked after a while.

“Hospital.” Nathan growled.

“Why? What are we going to do at the hospital? What do you need me for?”

Nathan looked at her like she had two heads. “We’re going to run some tests on you, especially about that pregnancy you keep talking about like that’s the only thing your life is built on.”

“Oh, please, lawyer, spare me the anguish. Why would I lie about being pregnant?”

“It’s a good thing you remember that I’m a lawyer, Silver. Because I’m not going to let this case go underground like that. With all the resources and authority in my power, I will do my possible best to get down to the root of all this.”

“You know I’m pregnant. I showed you the test results.”

“You showed me the test results, Silver,” Nathan said, “but the test results didn’t say if that was my child. And I’m tired of being blackmailed and led about. We’re going to conduct a paternity test to be sure of who the father of your child is.”

“And just who do you think the father of the child is or will be, Nathan? If not you.”

Nathan considered her words. “The odds of getting pregnant from what we had-a one-night affair where we were both drunk? The odds aren’t impossible, but I don’t want to believe that my one drunken act is what’s biting me in the ass like this right now. We’re going to have that test, no matter what you say or do.”

Nathan revved the car up at that point, and stepped on the gas. Silver only blew air out of her face.

The drive to the hospital should have been short, but Nathan kept on thinking about everything that had happened so far, leading up to this penultimate moment. There was no saying for sure that the child couldn’t be his, but he needed to be sure. Silver had always liked him. The possibility that she just wanted to pin the pregnancy on him so there would be no way for him to back out of a relationship was very existent.

Nathan was certain; Silver just wanted him in her life, irrevocably. And just like she had proven the last few days, she was willing to go any mile, do anything within her power to ensure that her dreams were achieved.

He could not rule out that possibility. Especially not now that he was trying to sort things out with Demelza. Nathan was absolutely certain that he was in love with Demelza. Who wouldn’t be? He wanted very much for things to work out between him and Demelza, and the fact that Silver was present in the equation, ruining things, just would not sit down well with him.

He wasn’t willing to lose Demelza because of the actions of an irrelevant person like Silver. It had been just his one mistake that he made that night, with Silver. He was willing to hope and believe that he could do everything in his power to make sure that he ended up with Demelza.

They arrived at the hospital, and after he had explained the situation to the doctor, they had taken some samples for the DNA test. The hospital took samples from both Nathan and Silver and informed them that they would be informed when the results were ready.

After the test, Nathan drove Silver back to her house where she proceeded to walk sulkily back inside. He thought that she might go back to her drinks, but he didn’t want to hope too much. He drove out of her house and headed straight to his office. The gargantuan structure that was his firm continuously amazed him whenever he looked at it. It filled him with pride.

He walked in, heading for his office, but even as he moved, all he could hear were the whispers of the scandal that Silver had started. Like a wildfire, the news was not abating any time soon. Even his employees were talking about him behind his back.

Nathan cursed. Silver was certainly a monster. To tarnish his reputation in this way in less than a single day.

He ignored the talks as he went about his work, but that did not mean that he couldn’t hear whenever his name was mentioned or the scandal was brought up in shushed conversations and whispered gossip.

He had almost completely settled down when he noticed that something was very wrong.

Demelza was nowhere to be seen. He tried not to be worried about it. The previous day had been a very difficult one, especially for Demelza who was an innocent in the entire kerfuffle. He determined that the first thing he needed to do was curb the spread of the news from getting any further.

They were a law firm. The least they could do was handle public incidents such as this. Nathan sat in his chair and made a few calls around, to some other operators, and to several news and publishing houses. The work began: taking down all of the content that Silver had uploaded, even though the work was extremely difficult.

Silver had made sure that the news had gone far and wide and too many people had picked it up. Mopping up the scandal was tough work, but Nathan felt like he could leave the work to progress without continuously monitoring it now. He dealt with professionals. They would surely resolve the situation even if took a long time.

Finally, he called Demelza. The phone rang several times, but Demelza didn’t answer. Nathan sighed. He had expected this, but it still hurt. He decided that he needed to see her in person to at least apologize.

He was out of the office in no time, driving down to the hotel where Demelza stayed. When he got there, he strode straight to her room. He had a key, but knocked anyway. No answer.

He decided to enter anyway. Demelza would have to forgive him. He just needed to see her even if she hated him right now.

He had not gone more than a few steps into the room when he saw Demelza on the bed, unmoving. Worried, he ran to her.

“Demelza, are you alright?” He asked, not bothering to keep the fear out of his voice. “What’s going on?”Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.

He pulled the blanket from her and found that her skin was clammy and she was even starting to look a little pale.

“Have you had anything to eat?” he queried. But Demelza said nothing, only stayed there in his arms, flopping as he shook her. No Nathan was very worried.

He had his car brought around quickly, and placing Demelza in the car, he sped all the way to the hospital, praying that she was not dying.
