Chapter 46
May POV
“Aren’t you coming inside? I should offer you juice to take,” I bent over the car window once I alighted from the car. Lily had just come to drop me off at the front of the gate.
“It’s late already. Let’s make it some other time. I need to head home early so I can wake up early for work tomorrow,” She reminded me, and I nodded. This content © Nôv/elDr(a)m/a.Org.
“That’s fine. When are we going to see eachother again?”
“I don’t know yet, but I’ll find a way to see you during the week or by the weekend. Bye! And don’t forget to make progress with my in-law. Stop being so guarded,” I rolled my eyes as I straightened my back.
“Bye,”
She chuckled as she wined up the glass. I turned and headed inside once she drove off.
It was already 7:30pm, and everywhere was dark.
I was just about to head to the entrance door when my phone started to ring, and I checked to see that the caller was Miles. This was the fifth time he was calling me in thirty minutes, asking where I was.
Since I was already in the compound, I ignored the call and proceeded to the entrance door, but shortly after the call ended just before I could open the door, a text popped on my phone.
‘Why are you not taking my call? Are you ok? Is everything alright? Where are you? I’ll come pick you up’ It was a text from Miles.
The aroma from the kitchen room welcomed me inside, and my stomach grumbled hungrily even though I’ve eaten an hour earlier.
“Finally! You are here,” Miles breathed out in relief as he walked into the living room from the kitchen.
“I’ve been worried about you. Why didn’t you take my call?” My heart fluttered as he pulled me into his arms and hugged me tightly like he had missed me all day.
“I was so worried. Why did you stay out so late?” He looked into my eyes worriedly once he pulled away from me with his hands on my shoulders.
“Uhm… I was already here. That’s why I didn’t take the call,” My voice came out weakly, and he breathed out in relief once again.
“Go shower and come downstairs for dinner,” He slowly patted my hair with a smile on his face, and I nodded.
“I’ll be back,” I left for my room.
A smile formed on my lips as I walked inside my room minutes later, my heart still racing as a result of what happened back in the living room.
Once I stripped out of my dress, I dragged myself sluggishly into the bathroom and had a long bath before I went to join Miles in the dining room where the table was already set.
“You are here?” He raised his gaze to me with a warm smile on his face as he stood up and pulled out a chair for me while beckoning on me to come have a seat.
“Thank you,” I muttered shyly as I walked over to the chair and sat on it.
“I made white macaroni and stew. I didn’t know what you would like, so I just made that. I hope you like it,” He spoke up as he served me a portion of the food, and the sight of it already heightened my appetite. How was I not supposed to like it?
“Hmm… Thank you,”
Once he was done serving me, I began eating without even waiting for him to dish his own portion first. I was so famished that I could not wait.
“It’s too late to drink juice. Do you want chill water instead?”
“Yes, chill water is fine,” I looked at him briefly.
“Alright. I’ll go get it for you,” I could not help the smile that formed on my face as I watched him walk inside the kitchen. Gosh! Isn’t he so cute?
The sound of his footsteps made me return back to eating, and he walked inside afterward with a glass of water and dropped it carefully on the table for me.
“Thank you,”
“Hmm,”
An awkward silence crept into the atmosphere afterwards as we both eat. Although I wasn’t looking at him, but I could swear on my life that his gaze was all over me as I could feel it.
“So, tell me… How did your day go?” He broke the awkward silence, and I glanced at him.
“Well… Nothing much happened. After you left for work, I was just bored at home. I watched a movie on my phone for hours before I asked to hang out with Lily. She came to pick me up, we went to the park, took a walk, talked about random things until it was late,” On normal days, I would just tell him that my day went well, but here I was, telling him everything in details.
‘That’s how it feels when you are in love, girl. You always feel like telling him everything’ My subconscious mind reminded me, and I smiled shyly to myself.
“That must be exhausting,” He stated briefly, and I nodded.
‘How about you? How did your day go?’ It was literally the first time I was having the urge to ask him that kind of question, but for no reason, I found myself holding back. I didn’t know if it was appropriate to ask him that.
‘Just ask him, girl. You shouldn’t hold back. You love him, which makes you curious to know what’s going on with him, so you should ask him’ I told myself and cleared my throat after I sipped some water.
“So…” I paused and bit my lip. “How about you? How did your day go?”
He looked shocked while staring at me. I guess he wasn’t expecting me to reciprocate the question. I was starting to regret asking him that when a smile formed on his lips, and I sighed in relief.
“Nothing much happened. Just at the office earlier, missing someone so much and desperately,” He shrugged, and I batted my eyelashes as I stared back at him, wondering who the person was.
‘Does he have a girlfriend? Did he get into marriage with me to get a revenge on his girlfriend? Is this some sort of movie or novel to him?’ I was starting to lose my mind as I bit my inner lip curiously and disappointedly.
“Oh,” I just muttered and nodded sadly before taking my attention back to my food. What will happen to me if he has a girlfriend? What about our child?
‘You never had plans of telling him about the child or getting married to him for real, so don’t sweat it’ I told myself, but then, I could not deny the pain. That was all in the past when I didn’t have feelings for him, now I was ready to be with him.
‘Don’t be sad, May. You are not sure yet. Besides, you’ve never seen him with another woman. If you are curious, you should ask him directly to know the truth’ I told myself, but quickly dismissed the thought especially the last one. I didn’t want to look desperate though I was.
“Are you ok?” His voice disrupted my thoughts as he gently placed his palm on my hand which was on the table, and I was welcomed by his worried face when I looked at him.
“Hmm… I’m fine,” I nodded as I forced a smile.
“I’ll be in my room. I’m full,” I dropped the spoon in my hand and was going to stand up, but he held my hand and sat me back down.
“Can you spare me a minute of your time? I want to ask you a question,” He looked straight into my eyes with emotions which left me questioning myself if I was just imagining things or if he was really being like this.
“Hmm,” I gently sat back on the chair.
“I’m just curious about something…” He paused then reclined on the chair and briefly sighed.
“I’m just wondering what your ideal type of man is. I mean, what’s your type of man? The type of man you would want to get married to and spend the rest of your life with,” It felt like he was staring right into my soul as those eyes pierced into mine.
My heart palpitated in my chest, and I swallowed nothing. That was the last question I expected from him, and I didn’t know the answer to give him.
‘Just tell him that he is’ I wanted to tell him that he really was my kind of man, but I was scared. What if he rejects me? What if it turned out that he never liked me all along? What if he had just been nice to me because we are married and never really had any feeling for me? In seconds, many questions ran through my mind.
“Why are you asking me that all of a sudden?” I scoffed nervously and rolled my eyes, looking everywhere else except his face.
“Well, I’ve not thought about that…” I shrugged and rolled my eyes. “What about you? What’s your type of woman?” I blurted out the question in a bid to avoid his question.
“You!” His reply left my heart frozen in my chest as those eyes pierced into mine like they were staring right at my soul.
“You are my kind of type of woman, May,” My mouth dropped open in shock. Is this some sort of confession?
