“What took you so long? We’ve been waiting for years!” Jada, her childhood best friend, exclaimed, her frustration and relief intermingled. Emma was taken aback, facing Jada, with whom she shared every secret and dream.
Their last encounter had been a bitter argument over Emma’s decision to marry Alex. Jada had strongly opposed it, leading to a rift that lasted years, with both families caught in the middle.
Reunited, tears welled up in Emma’s eyes. She had never expected to mend bridges with Jada or her family.
Jada, tears streaming down her face, urged Emma further inside. “Your brother and dad are waiting, she said, her voice choked with emotion.
Emma, overwhelmed, nodded and followed. Inside, she found her father, Stark, and her brother, Wayne. Seeing them, emotions she had suppressed surged forth. She rushed into her father’s embrace, noticing how time had etched lines of worry on his once youthful face.
Wayne watched silently, allowing the emotional reunion to unfold.
“Dad…” Emma whispered, her voice breaking. Her father’s hug tightened, a silent exchange of love and forgiveness.
Approaching Wayne, Emma apologized, recalling their heated argument over her marriage to Alex. She braced herself for his anger but found only a gentle acceptance.
Wayne’s assurance that her return was all that mattered filled Emma with warmth. Her family’s unconditional love was her true haven, she realized, regretting the years spent away. Emma and Wayne hugged each other tightly, with Emma weeping silently.
Wayne’s mention of their sulking second brother reminded Emma of the strained relationship with him, too. She felt a pang of anxiety at the thought of facing him.
Wayne’s reassurance eased her worries. Her family’s love was unwavering, regardless of past
conflicts.
That night, in her childhood bedroom, Emma found reminders of her family’s thoughts and care. Overwhelmed by their love, she felt a deep sense of gratitude.
Her reverie was broken by a call from Lillian, her sister–in–law, accusing her of stealing a necklace. Confused, Emma resolved to return all the lavish gifts she had received from Alex to his family. All she had ever wanted was his love and attention, and she never got them anyway. Of what use were his expensive gifts if there was no love between them?
