“Are you wearing it?” His eyes, deep and intense, murmured the question.

Kneeling on the plush bed, Gwendolyn clasped her hands over her chest, her almond eyes misty with hesitation. She bit her lap, struggling to find the words. Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.

Howard’s handsome face was a picture of cool detachment, yet there was a fire smoldering in the depths of his eyes, a blaze that seemed unstoppable.

“No?” he probed again.

Gwendolyn’s head bowed, her ears burning with heat.

A chuckle escaped from his throat as he leaned down to kiss her, “Dr. Gwen, why so shy?” After all, they had shared their most intimate truths earlier

Her cheeks flushed as if to bleed.

She knew what was to come tonight, and she would surrender herself completely to Howard. Recalling Sandra and Nathan’s words, she took a deep breath and mustered the courage to say,

“Well, Mr. Chadwick, you could always find out for yourself whether I’m wearing it or not.” Her voice was soft, trembling at the end. Her eyes shimmered with a youthful allure.

“Okay” The word rolled off his tongue with a deliberate ease.

His nimble fingers reached for the collar of her nightgown, unhurriedly undoing each button, revealing glimpses of pale skin and the contrast of black lace.

At that moment, the intrusive ring of a cell phone shattered the tender atmosphere

Howard frowned in annoyance.

It was her phone.

“It’s from my hospital,” Gwendolyn explained softly, answering the call from the nurse’s station, “Hello?”

“Dr. Quigley, the patient in room 2121 is in critical condition.”

“I’ll be right there.”

After hanging up, Gwendolyn was fully aware that on–call doctors usually handle such emergencies, but Claude’s case was delicate, and she had insisted they call her for any concerns.

She looked apologetically at Howard, “Mr. Chadwick, I must go to the hospital,”

Their moment, so keenly anticipated, was abruptly interrupted.

Howard didn’t show anger. His voice was hoarse as he offered, “Til drive y

you there.”

“No need. Marina mentioned how important the new deal is for you. Get some rest.”

“Then I’ll have Cliff take you.” That was his final concession. Cliff was adept in self–defense and could ensure her safety.

Not another incident like the one with Jack.

“Okay.” Gwendolyn nodded and hurried to the dressing room to change before leaving

Howard’s gaze turned dark, his eyes resting on the bed strewn with adult toys, feeling a sense of emptiness. He picked up his phone and saw the recent call log, his gaze flickering.

He deleted the familiar number, then he dialed Nathan’s number.

Nathan answered with a chuckle, “How did it go? I even gave Gwendolyn some pointers.”

“You taught her?” Howard raised an eyebrow, no wonder his usually reserved wife had spoken so boldly. He warned, “I’ll train Gwendolyn. Keep your advice to yourself.”

Nathan grumbled, “No good deed goes unpunished, huh? You must’ve struck out. I can almost smell your frustration.”

“Meet me at the office in half an hour.”

Howard was concise, ending the call.

Nathan cursed, “Damn capitalist, calling me to work overtime at this hour. Is he mad?”

Despite his complaints, Nathan got in his car and dutifully drove to Summit Corp for the late–night shift.

In the hospital.

Gwendolyn rushed into room 2121, finding everything in order.

She asked the on duty nurse, “What happened earlier?

“Cardiac arrest, but it stabilized shortly after. I thought it best you be here, just in case. The nurse looked a bit guilty.

Unaware of any issue, Gwendolyn nodded and inquired,

“Who’s on watch tonight? The Lopez family didn’t hire a caretaker, prefeming to take turns tending to Claude themselves.
