NIRVANA
“Zarah, what are you doing here?” I grabbed my coffee and I met her in the hallway.
“You didn’t know?”
“Did they find a sick werewolf?” Kailin asked her as we got out of the pack house. “Tucker and Dad have prepared the cell.”
“It’s Gage.”‘ The way Zarah said, I instantly felt the hesitation and sorrow in her voice.
“What about him?”
“They’re on the way to bring Gage.” That was all she said.
“Gage is infected?” Blinking, I asked in shock. “How did it happen?”
“That’s all I know. Knight just called me to tell me that they got one.”
I held her wrist. My eyes stung with tears. “You can’t do that. You can’t experiment on him, Zarah. He’s part of our pack. I won’t let you do that.”
“We have no choice.” I’d never seen Zarah so cold until now. It was like she blocked her emotion somewhere no one could reach it. “How do we know the dagger works if we wouldn’t try it?”
“How do we know if it kills the virus can kill Cyrius?”
“Why are you second-guessing right now, Nirvana? We’ve worked hard to find something to end this plague, and suddenly, you’re not on board? We must try this one way or another, or you know what would happen if we fail. Even if we try this on other victims, the virus will still kill Gage. We don’t have a cure.”
“You do that. I’m not going to kill Gage. What if this happens to Sebastien or Shadow? Are you going to stab them, too?”
“Yes,” she answered without hesitation. “You may not understand it right now, but soon when you’re in my position.”
“You like to be the hero saving people, Zarah. You break the natural law to play God. I’m not you. I don’t have that strength.”
“You can hate me right now, Nirvana, but don’t wait until more of your pack members get infected. Gage got infected because the sick werewolves were getting closer to the vineyards. If you don’t act fast, one of your loved ones can be infected anytime soon. Don’t ever call me or come begging for my help. I’m done here if you don’t do what I told you. I’ll deal with my own problems at home.” Zarah glared at me one more time before she walked away.
I wiped my tears as we parted ways. I didn’t know what to do anymore. Why did God or whoever gave me this task if they knew I would hesitate to hurt my people for the good of others? Why did I have to leave the people I loved to save many? This was unfair.
“Hey. It’s gonna be okay.” I felt Kailin rubbing my back.
“No. It’s not. I can’t hurt Gage.”
“Vana, you have to think about how many people you could save. At least you have to sacrifice one, even if it seems immoral and illegal. We don’t have a cure, and Gage is already sick and will die soon. At least.” She blew a breath. “I can’t believe I’m gonna say this, but he will serve his purpose. I feel bad for him. Truly. It breaks my heart knowing that one of us, our family, is sick, but we don’t have a choice.”
“Maybe there’s another way that doesn’t involve me stabbing him. Besides, his body and Cyrius are different.”
“I thought all infected are somewhat linked to this son of a bitch, that’s why we’re doing this. It means it can hurt him if it can kill the virus.”
“I don’t know anymore, K.” I wiped my face when I heard vehicles approaching.
“They’re here.”
“I’ll be there soon once they put Gage in the cell. God.” I looked up to hold back my tears, but they fell anyway. “They’re treating him like a bad guy.”
“Vana, I know this situation is difficult, but he’s sick. If his wolf becomes feral, he can hurt any of us, or worse, he can scratch or bite us. This is just a precaution to keep us safe from him.”
“Hey. What’s going on?” Knight walked towards us.
I breathed deeply and wiped my face clean when he came closer.
“What happened?” He looked devastated. Watching his pack member slowly being destroyed by a virus must have been very difficult for him.
“Nothing.” I tried to smile and hugged him tight.
“You’re upset.” He hugged me back.
“I’m so sorry, baby, this happened to Gage.”
“Thank you, sweetheart.” He sighed deeply, and he hadn’t let me go. “I hope he would be the last one. I can’t take this. Watch the people I cared about slowly dying before my eyes.”
I pulled away and cupped his face. “I know this is hard, but we will do everything to find a way to stop this madness. Gage will be the last one to be infected. This has to end, Knight.”
“I hope so.” Watching him so helpless almost broke my heart.
“We should go.” McKaye came. “He’s cooperative, but he’s getting worse, Alpha.”
“Is Zarah not here yet?”
I dropped my gaze in shame. “I made a mistake. I said something terrible to her. I’m sorry.” I cried again. My tears fell like a stream.
“Hey. It’s okay. I’ll call her again. Don’t worry.” He wrapped his arm around me, rubbing my arm as he soothed me.
“Let’s go see Gage then.”Content © copyrighted by NôvelDrama.Org.
The pack had created what looked like a state-of-the-art underground bunker. It had rooms and complete supplies for emergencies. At the end corner was the cell. It was separated by thick iron bars and a vault door from the bunker.
“So you guys come here when there’s an attack?”
“That’s the purpose. It can withstand a nuclear blast.”
“It’s incredible but kinda unsettling that you have to build something like this because there’s always no guarantee of a pack attack.”
“That’s true.”
Lennox and Tucker left the vault door open. McKaye and Luka were already there watching Gage.
I swallowed hard as I saw what it was like to be infected. He was so pale, as if someone drained his blood. He had an infected wound on his shoulder. His eyes were red and sunken. When his nose started bleeding black, I looked away.
“I’m so sorry, Luna. I’m such a disappointment.” He went down from the iron bed to the cemented floor.
I went closer to him even if it broke my heart while terrified. With my heart pumping so hard in my chest, I held the iron bars and bent to sit down before him so I could look directly into his eyes. “This is not your fault, Gage.”
“If I get worse, promise me you won’t make me suffer.”
“Don’t. Don’t say something like that. We’re doing our best to find a cure.”
He laughed sadly. “You know there’s no cure, Luna.”
“I’m not giving up on you, Gage. If not for you, I wouldn’t have opened my eyes to the possibility that you existed. You’re the first werewolf I witnessed shift. Can you believe that? Because of you, you opened this world to me.”
“I feel it’s consuming me. Every blood in my body feels like burning. Every cell in my body is crawling. You can’t keep me in here.” He looked up at Knight, who hadn’t said anything since we came down. “Alpha, my last dying wish, don’t make me become something you won’t recognize anymore. Please, at least let me die as me, your enforcer.”
“You have my word, Gage.” Knight’s jaw ticked, and his eyes were red.
“Thank you, Alpha, Luna. Thank you, guys. At least I’m going to die before my pack, my family. I’m so sorry you have to see me like this.”
“Don’t apologize.” I smiled sadly. “You couldn’t have known.” I stared at him for a moment as I realized something. “I’ll be right back.”
I dragged Knight out of the cell.
“What is it, nirvana?”
Once we got out of the bunker, I asked Knight. “Where did you find him?”
“He was on his way here.”
“I have a bad feeling about this.” Goosebumps crawled over my skin.
“About?”
I turned my head to my right when I heard Zarah. I smiled, ran in her direction, and hugged her tight. “I’m sorry. I was caught in my emotions and stupidity. I didn’t mean what I said.”
“It’s fine. So tell us why you feel bad about something.”
“Didn’t Dylan say all infected are somehow linked together or are being mind-controlled by a master?”
We all shared the same look with one terrifying realization.
“Fuck.”
