KNIGHT
“You should answer that,” Dane said.
I had a feeling this call was something crucial. I answered the call. “Victor.”
“I don’t have much time.” The moment I heard those words, I closed my eyes and prepared for the huge bomb he was going to drop. “The council just cleaned house.”
Fuck.
“What do you mean? Where are you?” There was no need to keep this call secret. One of the cons of being a werewolf was the enhanced hearing. Even a voice from the other line was like a loudspeaker.
Dane and Nirvana heard everything Victor said. I put the phone down and put it on speaker.
“I just left the council. They betrayed me. They voted me out as the head of the council. That son of a bitch called for a meeting without me. When I reported to the council, Eloh had already my chair.”Belonging to NôvelDrama.Org.
The moment Dane heard what Victor had just said, he cursed under his breath. I saw with my very own eyes that he cared for Victor and could love someone.
“Shit. Where are you, Victor? I’m coming to get you,” Dane said.
“No. Stay there, son. It’s not safe anymore. They will come looking for you, too. Don’t come to my house.”
“I will contact Zarah, and maybe she can help.” She quickly typed a message to Zarah that our situation had worsened.
“How did this happen, Victor?” A lump formed in my throat as I found myself in a horrible situation with no way of getting out of it. First, this situation was with Cadogan, and now it was with the council. I didn’t think I could handle it anymore. A lot was happening; I just wanted to vanish and wake up in some deserted place.
“I told Eloh that Nirvana is the Guardian. I trusted that son of a bitch, and I was pretty confident he would betray me, so now they know the secret. They are planning to take her to the council.”
“Over my dead body, Victor,” I said through gritted teeth.
“That’s all I know. What they’re going to do if they have Nirvana in their hands, you won’t going to like it. I’m sorry, Knight. I know we have a deal and intend to do that, but now I can’t protect her anymore. I have allies, but we can’t see what’s coming without a man inside the council. She’s in grave danger now. I suggest you hide her where no one can find her.”
“I’m not hiding myself. Let them come and get me.”
“Nirvana, I’m so sorry. This is all my fault.”
“It ought to happen, Victor. I just texted Zarah. Maybe you should find a place to lie low, like a motel, so she can find you and take you somewhere safe.”
“This call might be monitored. Don’t say no more. Stay safe.” The call ended, and Nirvana was startled in her seat as Dane punched a wall.
“I will kill them with my bare hands.” The ring around his eyes glowed golden. He began growling, almost losing his control.’
I was vociferously pissed off, too. If they would come to take my mate forcefully, they just declared war, and I would not let them take her without a fight.
“They know everything about our plans.” I looked at Nirvana, who seemed silent. “You can’t stay here with me.”
“I’m not going anywhere. I am the only one who is capable of protecting this place. No offense.”
“You can’t be this stubborn, sweetheart. I will call Zarah.”
I just said her name. Zarah just came out of the portal, and then Victor followed.
He looked bedraggled as he hugged Dane tightly. “I’m so sorry. I let you all down. This wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t put a bounty on her.”
“At least we know now who’s on our side.” Calmer Nirvana put me on edge. I’d better hear her yelling and screaming at me, but like this, she made me worry even more.
“Let me guess, you’re staying,” Zarah told her.
She lifted her gaze. “Where do you want me to go? They’re coming after me and destroy this place, kill everyone that comes their way. I’m tired of putting everyone’s life as my shield. My best friend is still recovering because of my stupid decisions.”
“So you found out who did that to Kailin?” Zarah looked at me.
“Cadogan’s men.”
“So you’re surrendering yourself? Is that the idea you’ve got in your pretty brain?”
“Tell me then, I’m listening.” The way she said it, it concerned me. She was so relaxed on the couch while I wanted to kill everyone coming after her.
Zarah turned to Victor. “By any chance, did they come in contact with Cyrius?”
“Maybe during my absence, Cyrius paid a visit to Eloh, or maybe he was infected or mind-controlled. I have no idea. They removed me from my seat, Zarah. I want to kill them all.”
“Because of me. It all comes down to me.” Nirvana kept blaming herself. Guilt was drowning her.
“Hey.” I went to her and held her knees. “This is not on you. Months ago, you were just an ordinary girl wanting to manage a restaurant. This is why I didn’t want you in this treacherous world. I brought you in. This is on me. If I could-”
“If you could, what? Reset? I swear to God, if you say that to me, I will break your face.” She wasn’t kidding. She was so angry she could smash my face.
“I’m sorry, Nirvana. I love you, and I will die fighting to keep you safe.”
“I know.”
“What do you have in mind? Tell me. It’s unsettling you are too calm.”
“Let them come, and I don’t want anyone to interfere.”
I took a few moments to draw a slow breath, even if the heat was already working its way up my neck. “Are you fucking kidding me right now?”
She was gazing back at me with a hard, flinty look in her eyes. “I can’t stand anymore watching the people I care about getting hurt because some psychopaths are coming after me, Knight. I want to stop these people from hurting and from dying.”
After another beat of silence, I said that pissed her off, “I can’t let you do that.”
“How are you supposed to stop me, Alpha?”
She knew what would happen when Zarah touched her shoulder, but the witch was also powerful. I watched her eyes flutter close, and I had a feeling she was going to curse the fuck out of me when she woke up.
“Victor, go with Zarah. She will take care of both of you.” As the portal appeared, I held him in the arm. “If this is a part of your plan to betray me, I will find you to the end of the earth and rip your heart out. Do you understand me?”
“I know. Be careful, Knight. We have a bigger war to fight.”
I scooped a sleeping Nirvana and kissed her forehead before handing her to Victor. “Forgive me, my love.”
“Don’t worry. I will protect her with my life. You have my word.”
“I know.” The moment they walked into the portal, I felt like someone had just ripped my heart out from my chest, but there was no way I could protect her if she were too willing to turn herself into the council that betrayed us.
A loud bang slammed against the door, followed by a man’s voice. “Open the door, Alpha Knight.”
Dane and I shared a look before I walked towards the door and opened it.
“What’s going on? Who are you?” I stood before three men in suits, and I bet there were more out there waiting for us to make a stupid move.
“We’re from the Werewolf Council. We have a written order to search this premises to arrest your mate, Nirvana Thorne, and take her into our custody as she threatened the head of the council and a threat to the werewolf community.” He pushed the paper into my chest.
“My mate?” I grabbed the paper and didn’t bother reading it. “Are you kidding me? What sort of threat can she possibly pose? She’s a human.”
“Step aside and let us do our job, or we will arrest you for obstructing our search.”
“Fine. Go ahead.” I stepped out and let them find her if they could.
“Alpha, what’s going on? Why are they taking Nirvana?” Kaleb came to us. I could feel the tension in the pack house and smell the fear in the air.
“They just come inside the gate like they owned this place,” Luka grumbled.
“It’s okay.” Zarah took down the shield after they had searched this place. “How many are there outside?”
“Why are you so calm?” McKaye talked to me.
“It’s gonna be okay, guys. Just let them do their job,” I announced to everyone so they would not do anything stupid.
“Where’s your mate?” The guy who had just shoved the paper into me asked.
“The hell I know. You’re the one searching for her. Go do your job.” I walked out of the pack house with a smile. “Good luck finding her. I, myself, don’t have any knowledge of where she is.”
