Chapter 587 Stop Deceiving Yourself
After the doors to the operating room closed, Maggie finally walked over to Chloe.
Maggie had arrived early that morning, bringing James breakfast, but he said he had no appetite and insisted on having the sandwiches Chloe had made the day before. Chloe glanced at the sandwiches in Maggie's hand, realizing they were indeed the ones she had made. "So, James actually likes this stuff?" she mused.
Once James was in surgery, Chloe contacted Candy, who assured her that she could call anytime if she needed anything before hanging up.
Meanwhile, back home, Michael had booked an early flight and was about to head to the airport when he received a call from Ethan.
"Mr. Shawn, the hospital just called. They said..."
Michael frowned. "Said what?"
"They said Ms. Campbell slit her wrists. She's in critical condition."
Michael's eyes flickered with surprise at the news of Lucy's suicide attempt.
The last time he had seen her, she had mentioned wanting to be with Abel, the chairman of Kranton Bank.
"Mr. Shawn, should we go to the hospital to check on her?"
Michael frowned deeply. "I'm about to miss my flight. You don't need to inform me about her matters anymore."
He had already severed ties with Lucy long ago.
Even if she tried to use her connections at Kranton Bank to cause trouble for Shawn Heavy Industries, he could still dip into his savings to help the company weather the storm. What he despised most was being threatened by others.
After hearing the phone click, Ethan hesitated momentarily before putting his phone down. "Since Mr. Shawn said not to bother, there's no need for me to visit Lucy at the hospital," he thought. At the hospital, Lucy was rushed into the emergency room after her suicide attempt. After two hours of critical care, she was finally stabilized and brought out.
As she awoke from unconsciousness, the first thing she did was search the room for any sign of Michael.
"Stop looking. He didn't come."
Owen's voice rang out from the other side of the room. Lucy turned to look at him, tears welling in her eyes.
"What are you doing here?"
Owen gazed at Lucy intently, unable to believe that the girl he once admired had ended up like this.
"What will it take for you to wake up? Michael never liked you, not before he divorced Chloe, and certainly not after. He's already flown to Mamaica to chase after Chloe on this morning's flight." Lucy lay in bed, her expression shattered.
"No, that's impossible. Michael can't possibly have no feelings for me. We've known each other for so many years. I met him long before Chloe did. I've done so much for him. How could he not like me?" Owen watched as Lucy spiraled into madness, his heart a mixture of emotions.
"Lucy, stop deceiving yourself. Michael has only ever seen you as a friend. By the time you started repeatedly going after Chloe, you had already worn out whatever affection he had left for you." Lucy, hearing this, sat up in bed, furious. She grabbed the medical chart from the bedside table and hurled it at Owen.
"You're lying! Shut up! Michael would never abandon me. He's already divorced Chloe. There's no way she would ever forgive him!"
She stubbornly believed that she was the only one left in Michael's life, that if she just held on a little longer, he would finally recognize her love and come back to her.Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
"Lucy, back when you were young, were you really the first one to meet Michael?"
This was a topic Owen and others had never brought up before.
Lucy froze at his words, her eyes narrowing with suspicion as she looked at him. "What do you mean?"
