Chapter 585 Regret
Maggie spoke calmly, leaving Chloe and James both stunned as they looked at her.
"You went through so much trouble to get that permanent residence certificate abroad. Why get divorced now?"
Maggie shook her head. "Yes, I know. But I made a mistake. I always thought that with time, I could develop feelings for Jones. For a while, I even believed I had fallen in love with him. But then I saw you again." In fact, Maggie had already regretted her decision when she brought Jones to the class reunion and saw James there. But at that time, Chloe was by James' side, and Jones was by hers.
No matter how she felt, it wasn't the right moment to express her feelings for James. Besides, when she returned home, she found that Jones was really good to her. Once again, she hesitated.
But as time dragged on, she saw James give Chloe that heirloom ring.
Panic began to set in, and finally, after hearing that James had left the country, she couldn't bear it any longer. She divorced Jones and came to find him.
"James, let's start over, okay? There's no one standing in our way anymore."
Maggie reached out, trying to take James' hand, but he pulled away without hesitation.
"Who said there weren't any obstacles before?"
James' words left Maggie stunned.
At that moment, James' gaze fell on Chloe, who was absentmindedly examining a potted plant nearby out of boredom. He couldn't help but chuckle. Hearing him laugh, Chloe finally looked over, her face full of confusion.
"Are they talking about me?" she thought.
"James..."
Maggie's eyes were filled with sorrow. She had assumed that James was only with Chloe to spite her.
She felt that she was back and he should have reunited with her without a second thought, casting Chloe aside.
"Maggie, I admit that I once had unresolved feelings for you, but that was all they were just lingering feelings. I've moved on, and you should too."
Maggie hadn't expected him to say that. "I don't want to!"Content provided by NôvelDrama.Org.
She had finally sorted out her emotions, wanting to express them to him, to rekindle their old relationship. She couldn't accept that he was telling her to move forward, to live her life without him. "James, a life without you isn't really living!"
In the past, James might have felt something hearing her say this, but to his surprise, he felt nothing now.
In fact, he wanted her to leave so that Chloe could continue reading to him.
When he had tried reading on his own earlier, he felt how dull the stories were, and nothing compared to how interesting they became when she read them.
Tears finally spilled from Maggie's eyes, which had been brimming with them. "James, back then, your father told me you were going into the military and that we could never have a future together. I admit I got scared and thought it was true. "But later, I figured it out. After a year of studying abroad, I could come back and be with you. I could explain everything, and I was willing to wait for you. But when I came back, you had already dropped out!"
Maggie had never mentioned these old wounds to James before, and her pride prevented her from doing so.
But now, her pride meant nothing compared to the chance of being with James again.
Seeing her tears, James wasn't completely unmoved. He took a tissue from the side and handed it to her. "Stop crying."
His tone was gentle, and Maggie took it as a sign that he was giving her a chance.
"James, please forgive me. I was young back then and didn't understand my own heart. But now I've figured out my feelings for you. Even if you don't accept me right now, it's okay. You used to chase after me. Now, it's my turn to chase you." James sighed softly. "I'm sorry."
