Chapter 14
Rita made her way to the restroom, oblivious to the hooded figure trailing her. The figure walked stealthily, keeping his distance away from his prey. He had a job to do and he wouldn’t fail his master.
Rita walked into the restroom, doing her business. When she was done, she walked to the sink which was outside. She washed her hands while adjusting her makeup. When she looked up, she was startled upon seeing the figure which was pointing a gun on her head.
“Who are you?”, she asked.
She secretly congratulated herself on how controlled her voice was. She wouldn’t show fear as that would only make her look weak and helpless. She had no way to call Rodrigo, she could only hope that he comes in soon.
“No one. It would be in your best interest if you follow me quietly. Don’t make any sound or I’ll blow your head off”, he said.
Rita gulped, hoping against hope that Rodrigo would come in that minute. The figure led her through the back doors of the building. Oblivious to the attendees, a kidnapping was taking place. The figure led her outside to the cool night air. Rita could see that a car was already waiting, ready to take her to God knows where.
Just then, Rodrigo burst through a side door, gun drawn at the figure. The figure pulled her towards him, placing the gun on her her head.
“Rodrigo”, Rita screamed
“Take one more step lover boy and I’ll blow her brains off”, the figure threatened.
“Don’t do that. Please, let her go. Take me instead”, Rodrigo begged.
“No, the boss requested for her and not you”, the figure said.
Right before her very eyes, Rodrigo opened fire, aiming at the figure. In a moment of bravery, Rita stabbed the figure with her purse, freeing herself from his grip. Gunshots were heard inside the building as people scampered to safety.
Rodrigo snatched her up before she could hit the ground. With a strength she didn’t know he possessed, he carried her bridal style, running out of the building. Quickly, he opened the car, depositing her in before he ran to the driver’s side.
With a screech, the car went hurling into the air, speeding with all the strength it had. Rita gripped the seat, fearing that they would crash.
“Who were they”, she shouted.
“I have no idea but I’ve already contacted the other security details. We should get a reply by nightfall”, he said, his eyes on the road.
Rita was scared, petrified even. She couldn’t believe that she just had a close shave with death. No doubt, this would scar her for life.
They got to the Anderson tower soon. Rodrigo led her towards her room, his eyes scanning everywhere for threats. They got to the room soon and only then did she heave a sigh of relief. She slumped on the couch, closing her eyes to catch her breath.
Rodrigo walked towards her, taking her in his arms. He buried his face in her neck, breathing in her scent.
“I’ve never been so scared in my life”, he said.
Rita cupped his jaw, giving him a gentle kiss. If Rodrigo hadn’t come at that moment, she would have been dead.
“Thank you, you saved my life”, she said, a lone tear sliding down her cheeks.
“As from now on, I’ll be following you wherever you go. I’m never letting you out of my sight ever again”, he said, gripping her tighter.
“Even the bathroom”, she laughed.
“Well maybe except that but I’ll be in the same room where you are”, he said.
Just then, his phone beeped, indicating he had a message. He swiped the screen, revealing the message.
“It’s about the shooting. Apparently, the security details have no idea who was behind it, they think it’s someone who isn’t in your father’s good books”, he said.
“I’m not even surprised, not everyone likes my father. But I don’t understand, why would I be the target?”, Rita said.
“It’s easy. If they can’t get your father, they’ll get him through you. Which means you need more than one security detail because I have a feeling that whoever these people are, they’ll be back and it could be worse than this”, Rodrigo said.
Rita sighed, feeling tired all of a sudden. There was so much she had to do and this just became an addition.
“How did you get a gun? I mean, it’s required since you’re my personal guard but I’ve never seen you use it”, she said.
“You don’t know this but your father gave it to me when I began working for you. He told me I would need it soon, I guess he was right”, he smiled, drawing her closer.
“But… Did you really kill that guy?”, she shuddered.
She hated to think what would become of him if he was convicted of murder. Even though it was an act of self defense, the court wouldn’t find it funny. If it got to that, she was prepared to use everything within her means to set him free.
“No, I shot him on his shoulder, he’ll live”, he smiled.
Rita slumped in relief. She couldn’t imagine the horror she’ll live through if Rodrigo was guilty, now her heart was at rest.
Her phone gave a shrill sound, indicating she had a call. She knew who it was and sure enough, on the screen was the word “Mum”.
“Hey mum”, she chuckled.
“Good gracious, tell me you’re alright Rita”, she screamed into the phone.Original from NôvelDrama.Org.
Rodrigo cringed, laughing silently at her outburst. Rita knew that she was dramatic but this was just beyond what she usually does.
“Mum, I’m fine. I have Rodrigo with me, in fact he saved my life”, she said.
“Oh, God bless his heart. Your father and I have been so worried since we saw the news just a few minutes ago. Gosh! I’m never letting you out of my sight, ever again”, she sobbed.
“Oh gosh! Mum, please stop. I’m not dead. After all, you’re talking to me now. Please, stop it I’m fine” she said, wringing her hands together with Rodrigo’s.
“Okay, when would you be back?”, she asked.
“Tomorrow morning, I promise. First thing in the morning”, she said.
“Okay, see you. Stay safe darling”, she said before cutting the call.
“I should call my mum too. She’ll be worried sick”, he said, rising to his feet.
Rita got up with him, escorting him to the door. He cupped her jaw, giving her a gentle kiss. Rita laid her head on his palm, loving the rough feel of it
“Lock your door when I leave and do not open up for anyone. I’ll call you when I’m coming”, he said.
“I will, thank you. Sleep well”, she said.
He nodded, pecking her before he walked away. He had a lot of work to do and now was the perfect time to begin.
